I had a similar situation a few years ago and despite giving the garage more time to sort the problem out they made excuses after excuses. I got the car picked up and sent to another garage and they sorted it in a few hours.

It cost a bit more money but in the long term it was worth it.

Thank you 🙂

If he told you it was the clutch and it wasn't you don't owe him £650 he has replaced parts that were not needed, and they have not fixed the car.

Did you agree to him fitting the parts as it looks to me from the text you asked him not to do anything before talking to you.

I would advise you to speak to citizens advice as soon as you can they will be able to advise as to me it looks like you are going to end up with a dead car and a bill for the parts it didn't need.

I agree with the above and if they can prove it wasn't the clutch you have a case to take the other garage to small claims court to get your money back.

If you get to the stage where you have to pay to get the car back use a credit card, then it's much easier to get your money back should you find out you have been stitched up.

I just don’t understand why I’m being ignored- I’m not going to disappear!

I shall call them and try to make arrangements to get the car transported somewhere else.

Yes I categorically said do not do anything without discussing

i made that very clear vocally and via text.

It's a bit of an assumption but i would guess he hasn't a clue what he is doing (and it sounds like that is the case) so as he cannot fix it he will have ditched your car and will be cracking on with cars he does know how to fix knowing eventually you will take it away.

If you have proof of that you have nothing to worry about he shouldn't have fitted the parts, i would give citizens advice a call if nothing else it will give you some peace of mind.

Give them a link to this thread 😉

They don't deserve your money after giving you the run-around.

Because they probably have no idea what to do next. In an ideal world they'd admit it and discuss options, but people have great trouble showing any kind of 'weakness' even when it's obvious to everyone else that they goofed.

Yes, looking at you comrade V.P. 😛

the garage owner has been on car for two days. He replaced clutch on first day....

Which surprises me... Did he have a clutch in stock or manage to get one very quickly or not in-fact change it at all?

( I know that Toyota told me recently that it would take 2-3 days to order in a clutch. )

Just a thought...

If it's a 2006 it is a mk2 and its an automatic - it will be the MMT (Multi Mode Transmission) this is an automated manual gearbox

Just found another data sheet specifically for the 1.4 diesel MMT

1ndtv diesel mmt.pdf

Also there is a full TSB on diagnosis - CP-0081T-0815

In their defence, most decent garages can get stuff from a motorfactors pretty quick if they're in stock; I'm always seeing e.g. Euro Car Parts couriers dropping off stuff at the place I get my tyres changed while I'm waiting, and I swear sometimes they order them when I arrive and get them just as I'm leaving!

May also be they pre-ordered the parts if the work was booked in advance.

Most of the wearing parts of the MMT are similar to a normal manual gearbox, it's just the robotic actuators and gear selectors that are the PITA part.

But this sort of thing is why the MMT has been so unpopular; You really need a specialist or at least someone experienced with them to do the job properly as they're not like normal gearboxes. Just be glad it isn't a german DSG unit!!!

I don't know if you can do all the MMT calibrations and stuff with a normal diagnostic tool or if you actually need Toyota Techstream.

I sincerely hope that this is an outcome for you anyway, and that you have not been had over.

Ah well,if your car runs fine after you get it back tomorrow, all is well and good.

Any further update on this appreciated,as it may help others with similar problems.

Fingers crossed for you and your Yaris 🙂

It was a tongue-in-cheek/joke comment, to mean after all of that, thinking it was a major problem, it was just something as simple as a dirty sensor!

To be fair with modern cars the biggest issues can be caused by a sensor the size of your thumb.  I've had it myself and you are like "ffs that killed my entire car?"

🤣
