  1. Right guys, I pretty much do this anyway but thought Id post up make it more organised and see if anyone else was interested in this. Had a word with Les and he is OK for me to post this up..... so..... Basically I'm willing to lend a hand to members of the forum with regards to maintenance and mechanical issues. Those that wish to do a similar thing in other areas of the country may also post up their info in here. The more the merrier, but please only do so if you are truly comfortable working on someone else's car. Please Remember!!. . . . . . It is expected that you are able to travel to the location of the member offering help, not them travelling to you! Members offering assistance may not be mechanically trained and can not be held responsible for breakages/damage caused during jobs. Although care is taken to do the best job possible. If the job you need doing is too complex or critical, the person(s) offering help in the area have the right to decline help and as such advise you to use a Dealer or Independent garage. This is also the case if on initial inspection the work required is not as discussed. Where again, you will be advised to visit a Dealer or Independent garage. There are no warranties and no guarantees on any work done. Visits should be discussed and arranged in advance. Any parts and consumables should be supplied by yourself and in good working order. This is an offer of help to forum members, it is not here to be abused. This offer of assistance is in no way related to, or associated with the TOC forum and its staff. Always use a dealer/independent garage if you have any concerns

  4. My IQ Suits me at the moment however, my best "car" was a Audi A8 that ran without any problems for over 200,000 miles across most of Africa on roads (and off roads) that were more suited to a Land Rover Defender ! I did eventually buy a new Land Rover Defender with a BMW 6 cylinder petrol engine that also ran without problems round most of Africa through rivers and took everything I threw at it for over 100,000 miles never missed a beat ! I those days all my cars had to put up with all sorts of conditions that would kill most cars dead !

  5. Toyota (& lots of other auto companies) in the US have said that their warranty doesn't cover E15 usage.

  6. If you simply grab the surround of the display and pull it, it comes off completely in seconds. There are 2 philips screws, one each side. You could just check on these first. There is a fair sized void behind the display which if required easily comes out after talking 2 plugs off. You could tightly pack this void with dense foam or other material. All assuming the vibration/rattle is coming from that area David

  10. I had a good look at my IQ today and thought, why didn't buy one of these sooner? Now I'm back using a manual, I've got the slick gear changes back, the control of when I want to change gear. I now think my IQ3 is the best car I've ever bought without a doubt. It drives great, it looks fantastic, it's very small it's very comfortable, has loads of useful goodies, great on fuel and a long warranty. I's a good thing I'm nearly at the end of my driving life I hope the IQ will outlast me. if that wasn't the case, what the hell would I buy instead?

  11. That David is what I remember the new Smart will be like Renault guts and Smart shell. 2 seat only. I'm beginning to think we're stuffed for a replacement IQ, We're also stuffed for a supersonic passenger airoplane! The world is going backward in so many ways. (Oh, I see what you mean about the Yamaha dash, but it's only a prototype as yet.)

  12. Hi Phil, Very interesting discussion I wish I found this thread a number of months ago! Your initial message was like a duplicate of mine regarding light straight ahead nowhere else. Timboo, that was me giving Toyota grief on their official forum saying very similar things as Phil! I don't often make a fuss about things but they are so bad I felt I had to. I have also written to Toyota officially twice and complained about them. Their response is that they won't even bother to get out from behind their desks to drive one and simply comment that everything is tested to an acceptable standard! Funny they have had many previous safety recalls if everything is perfect from day 1 and they don't need to test anything isn't it!? I'd urge anyone else to do the same as they won't even think about testing these things unless there is a weight of opinion. Moaning on their page which POTENTIAL owners will find was a good start plus Toyota are very quick at monitoring that forum! Please add your comments to this blog and they will forward your issue to the Toyota team who will contact you directly and begin sending you letters:- http://blog.toyota.co.uk/new-toyota-auris-your-questions-answered Like you I was shocked when I got the car. We have an older Honda Jazz in the household too, and switching between the difference is quite unbelievable! I think part of the problem with other people (someone on the official forum said the lights were OK!?!?) is that they only drive the Auris and "get used" to just how bad they are (or drive mostly on lit roads). When in the Jazz navigating unlit thin country roads is quite a dream (like floodlights compared to Auris!) compared to squinting and jabbing on the brakes in the BRAND NEW Auris! Yes it's like driving to "Glow worms in Jam Jars"! (Loved that comment!). I HATE driving this nice new car at night on back lanes and will take the Jazz for such trips, that's a bit sad really.. I actually believe that turnings and tight bends on unlit roads is dangerous, for a couple of seconds until the car turns you're turning into complete blackness so just cross fingers and hope a ruddy great pot hole, kerb, pet or anything else isn't in your way! On these back roads this car has forced me to drive (illegally) with the fog lights on. This isn't a perfect fix but I think it's about a 25% improvement in immediate light to the sides. As everyone else has found, I also contacted Autobulbs and nope, HIR2 (or 9012) is not yet been replicated to any of these +90/+100/+120% type replacements. As someone else suggested I am going to try buying 9006 units of the +120% type and see if any difference is to be had, I am sure it won't be great as the whole idea of this "Halogen Infrared Reflecting" type setup is that they burn hotter and get better light output for a stock bulb. Worth a go though and I'd love feedback from how these work compared to HIR2 stock bulbs? Unfortunately fitting HID bulbs to a car in UK is also illegal but you know what, as these are projector type they lend themselves to work better with such a setup (not scattering light so badly as reflector units with HID retrofits which is awful) I'm *almost* tempted to do it based on the uselessness of the Toyotas brand new model offering (and remove before an MOT!)!! I'd also love to hear if anyone has done this too! I recently hired a car in Florida which was a brand new Corolla (very similar to Auris in many places) and this had HID lights, WOW what an improvement.. Thanks Toyota for cutting costs for the UK market!!! This does irritate me as one main reason of getting this car was to get out of the "modification" type line and messing with cars and get a nice simple 5yr warranty everything all in car, seems they forgot the headlights.. Thankfully after over two weeks away my car has not yet suffered the battery drain issue that I have been reading a lot about though so that's one silver lining.. :)

  13. Hi Royston, So talking to the dealer is out then! The Scangauge (if you google it you will find out about it in more detail) is a display unit that simply plugs into the on-board diagnostic port (ODB port) which is on the lower right edge of the panelling under the dash/steering wheel. I mainly use mine to make sure coolant temperatures are OK and the charging system is working properly, although warning lights are fitted to the car I am used to monitoring actual values for these sort of things. It gives a digital readout. The mpg readings require accurate calibration of the Scangauge to give meaningful results, but that is easily done and worth the effort. It can also be used to de-code fault codes when needed. There are other apps and gadgets that do the same sort of thing but I have used my Scangauge for about seven years (you can move it from car to car) and I find it invaluable for my purposes and totally reliable. 14. Hello Royston, The "readout not going over 60" was a fault that the first IQs had and was not subject to a recall but was fixed under warranty if the then owner pointed it out and said they wanted it fixed. I had it done on my first IQ in 09. Your PO apparently didn't bother but if you have just bought your IQ it will have some sort of warranty, if you bought it from a dealer, and you may be able to get it fixed by MrT. I am not sure if it will affect the computed mpg figures, not being able to "count" above 60, but it may well do so. I use a Scangauge for my mpg readouts so never look at the built in one, though that is of no use to you, of course! Perhaps a word with the dealer is in order, though I expect a sharp intake of breath and shaking of head may be the result. John
