... I think if you drive in France it's just a case of going into the menu and turning it off.

I know it was clarified in another post that French speed cameras have been removed, but, if they were not, it is not good enough to just switch them off. The French law is written such that having the speed cameras available but not in use, you will still be fined. This is the case also with portable units (Garmin, Tom Tom, etc), if these have French speed cameras on them--even if it is unplugged and in the boot--you will still get pinged, if they find it.
