They're literally saying it did this some time AFTER the recall update was applied, which is why they are extra miffed that it happened as they are wondering if the update has somehow caused this, which is why I was saying the dealer needs to check that the update was applied correctly and not like what happened to Nick's RAV4 (That had all its updates wiped)

DOH i don't know how i managed to skip the part  below as it clearly states he took it to the dealer.  :blushing:

The update is to improve reliability and stop the car from self destruction in certain conditions. Happened to many people on many more Toyota hybrids since 2010 and Prius gen3. It is indeed very scary and unpleasant experience. I also lost complete confidence in my car after same thing happened to me too. It took me weeks before I started it to worry anymore but now I always know, no hard acceleration especially when going over bumps cracks etc.

I rang the dealer straight up as soon as I received the letter and had two appointments cancelled on me because their IT system for the software updates was not working.  They were able to do it on the third appointment (Thu 22nd Dec) whilst I waited, I was there about an hour in total.  The recall letter did not state to not drive the vehicle until fixed though, as some recall notices do.

I live in Lancashire and drove to see my family in Cheshire (about 65 miles away) on Christmas Day with no incident.  I started to drive back home around 17:30 on that evening.  I was about 10 minutes into my journey on a dual carriageway (has a central reservation, 70mph speed limit) and just before you get to the M6 motorway which I would have travelled on.
 
There were two lanes on the dual carriageway, and there was no lighting.  I went to overtake a car in the left lane which was doing around 55mph.  As soon as I pulled right and put my foot down on the accelerator, I received alarms/lights and a complete loss of power.  The error displayed was Hybrid System Malfunction - Contact Dealer.  The car did not even go into limp/failsafe mode, literally I pressed the accelerator, and nothing happened.  So, I started naturally decreasing speed in the fast lane, due to no acceleration availability, and there were a couple of cars in the left lane.  I put on my hazards and indicated left all whilst slowing down due to lack of power.  I struggled to make it over to the grass verge as I had to wait for the cars to get past.  Over the next half an hour the hazards and lights seemed to dim at times, it appears the battery was losing power.
I bought the car just under 6 months ago from an official Toyota dealer, and called the AA breakdown number provided for Toyota Assistance which was provided as part of the package when I bought the car.  AA dispatched a breakdown guy, who recovered my car all the way to the Dealer and then took me home.  I got home around 21:30. 
 
The AA Breakdown Summary was, "We have arranged for a recovery of your vehicle.Vehicle cut out in fast lane of the dual carriageway on the junction with the m6. No electrics and road in total darkness,Recovered straight into dealer as ongoing issue. Engine Oil Level Ok. Coolant Level Ok."
 
I find it extremely concerning that this has happened as it was very dangerous and there could have been a crash or worse.  If I had of stopped completely in the fast lane, an approaching car could have crashed into me, as I say there were no lights, so the visibility was not great.  I also struggled to get over to the grass verge as there were cars already in the slow lane - again a crash could easily have happened.
 
I am also concerned because I received a Recall letter from Toyota about a month ago, the symptoms of which appear to be exactly what happened to me.  I took my car into Toyota on Thu 22nd Dec to have the required Software Update, a few days before this incident happened.
 
I believe the recall was along the lines of "Due to an improper programme g of hybrid system vehicle might not enter a failsafe driving mode. There is a possibility that the vehicle will not enter a failsafe driving mode if a temporary slip occurs in the input damper of the hybrid transaxle."
 
Since I had the car there have been no problems and I have been very happy with the car, so I am very concerned that an issue like this has occurred after a software update which appears to be supposed to fix the very issue that happened to me on Christmas Day.  The car has only done under 4000 miles as well.
 
This problem essentially ruined my Christmas.  It was a very stressful and scary situation and made worse by the consequent inconvenience due to having no car.
I feel as though I have lost complete confidence in the car now.  I chose Toyota because they are a known reliable brand. and this is a car less than two years old, hasn't even required its first MOT yet.

UPDATE: Dealer confirmed there is a fault but they can't determine what it is yet, so they've sent it to a larger Toyota Vantage branch who have higher trained technicians, so hoping for an update next week.....

I don't understand the email comment from max. I think the guy stated that he visited the dealer for a software update prior to the incident. 

I really feel sorry for u nath. I have just had a recall note regarding the ecu software update from toyota. The first one in June 2021. I have also had problems with my Mk 4 since new. Big dislikes; Clunky doors, rattly dashboard and an awfully sounding 3 cyl engine at idle. Will never buy toyota again. Ps can't afford to sell the car now either.

All 3 cylinder engines sound odd at idle - Ford 1 litre Ecoboom cause the ramps at my local garage to rattle if there left running while up in the air.

Tinny noise from the doors was highlighted in many road tests when mk 4 Yaris launched.

Dashboard rattle - surprised your Toyota dealer hasn't cured that issue.

He tried to fix it by removing a panel at the very left side visible once the door is open but no luck. He suggested then to dismantle the whole dash. I said no thanks!

Just read again the recall note. It's exactly for the same reason as the one Nath reported. NOT THE ECU. Plan to have it done end of January 23 together with the annual service. Good luck to me!

What do you mean you can't afford to sell the car now? The 2nd hand cost of Mk4's has gone through the roof and you could probably sell it for equal to or more than what you got it for if you really want to get something else, but IMHO there aren't any cars in this class I'd consider to be better cars...

In my opinion there are no better cars in its class than the Yaris mk4 for it's overall ability. 

Good luck with the fuel economy and reliability of another manufacturer's petrol automatic with quiet engine sound. 

Maybe in the Mk5 Yaris or mk4.5, Toyota can further improved the engine noise, but for now this is it.

I will agree it's quite obnoxious when running stationary, and gets a bit raucous when flooring it, but aside from that it's pretty quiet and smooth, esp. for a 3 cylinder! I just try to pick routes that don't have me crawling through long queues of traffic to avoid the stationary engine noise.

I do wonder why as the Aygo's 3 cylinder is much less obnoxious; If anything it gets smoother the harder you rev it :laugh: 

Must admit I think the gripes are quite minor for such an extreme response (i.e. wanting to sell the car), but I've learned that some people genuinely prioritise the fit and finish over reliability and economy; Each to their own I suppose!

There are no better cars than Toyota in any class that Toyota offers hybrids just become of the hybrid drive train. Also other makes and models went that way to cheap on many parts, components and workmanship. Todays cars are more flat pack Ikea furniture rather then been artisan hand made from real wood. 👍

The M15A-FXE has no balance shaft so will not be that refined, the engine runs in a very different configuration with the e-CVT especially at idle as it's just acting as a petrol generator, the e-Cvt is a direct gear drive box as such it's going to be noisier than a fluid based system with a torque convertor

tbh the lack of sound proofing has a lot to do with it - they need to keep the weight down to keep it in the emission range, first thing to go is the sound absorbers

Probably not, that shouldn't make a difference. If anything Atkinson cycle should be smoother as it has a longer more gentle torque pulse than Otto-cycle?

Apparently the balance is built into MG1 from what I read, but what's weird is the engine is *only* like that when acting as a generator while stationary - When the car is moving, even at 1mph, it is much smoother, and if it's running but not generating or moving the car (i.e. to gust generate cabin heat), it's also much smoother and quieter.

I wonder if it's just an unfortunate coincidence that the load from MG1 combined with that specific RPM is causing a resonance? But you'd think something like that would have been caught during development...

Products can have a full test & development clean bill of health, then we as consumers get hold of the product & issues can arise.

I'm sure I read somewhere, possibly an early description of the three cylinder engine, translated from the Japanese launch blurb, that the balance shaft removal on the hybrid version would create a vibration problem in a specific rpm band, and that the engine management was designed to avoid that rpm, because it could!  So the problem was 'solved'.

Thanks for the great response to my recent comment. Maybe sell is easy but buying isn't. Long time to delivery and exorbitant prices. As I said before, Toyota must balance technology with refinement. Why not use a balancer shaft and/or also operate only on the Otto cycle. How much more can that affect consumption. Additionally, my car starts recharging immediately after driving off, although the Battery indicator is fully green!

Anyway u all have a great 2023.👌

Could you PM your chassis number and I can confirm the recall was applied
