  1. I have installed the media and I have to say it's fantastic. It's just like the one in the video I mentioned above. Everything works, and I'm happy: the hybrid information is displayed correctly; steering wheel control works as original car media; reverse camera image looks bigger now, thanks to the bigger display; sound seems slightly better than original car media; call quality is better; thanks to the 4 gigs and 8 core cpu, media is very snappy. cold starting takes about 2-3 seconds, faster than original car media; GPS lock is fast, around 3-5 seconds. Why did I buy it? Because I can use Waze, Spotify, Google Maps, Youtube and other nice Android apps without messing with my dashboard looks. The best thing of all? Installation can be made by anyone, it takes only 30 mins. No need to cut any wire, just plug in the existing wires into the media. Costs? Around 400 USD (~318 pounds): Android Media for Toyota Auris - 290 USD (~225 pounds) DHL shipping (3-5 days from pickup) - 40 usd (~32 pounds) Import Taxes - 70 usd (~56 punds) If there is somebody interested, PM me and I will give the seller's contact information.

  2. I think that this is part of the reason that Toyota have been reluctant to go with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto until the market is pretty much forcing it on them - everything is so interconnected.

  3. Was your demo a 2WD? The 4WD,m with the extra electric motor/generator on the rear axle has no hesitation at all. The Gen 2 & 3 Prius had a top and bottom glovebox as well as the cubby under the centre armrest - I had no trouble getting my iPad in the bottom glovebox, as well as my SR shape digital camera. [The Gen 4 Prius got one small glovebox and lost the space under the boot floor, which coupled with the poor rear headroom- probably explains why taxi firms no longer favour it.] I tend to think of the Excel as the top equipment model (a Toyota person on their blog said the same too), wile the extra cost of the Dynamic is for the extra trim bits and wheels that would otherwise be £600 extra. No wireless phone charging on any UK model. I've bought this for about £12 on eBay (see pic)

  4. Hi Phill, a good review. I have had mine for about 2 K miles now, items that I would have liked different are : Tonneau cover lifts up when the tail gate lifts up. Volumn control on the steering wheel being on the right not the left Australian information screen, ie vertical touch buttons being swapped over so the map button for instance is on the right not the left so not so far to reach over to operate. Home screen with the map view being in the direction of travel USB connection in the centre arm rest being the same as in the centre consul so I could have an iPod connected via USB all the time rather than Bluetooth Seat height adjustment for the passenger seat Sharper graphics for the screen would be nice This is my first Toyota ( Excel with JBL / Pano camera ) and I am finding the drive, mpg and general experience great and happy with my choice. Being a company car driver, low CO2 and tax are welcome as well.

  5. I had a front tyre puncture at midnight on our Gen 3. a few years ago. I called the AA and they were with me in 45 mins. Thee AA man fitted the "skinny" spare on the front. BIG mistake; the 10 mile drive home was scary. The car very unstable with other drivers tooting and flashing as I was driving at 40MPH and below. Above this speed it was very dangerous. Next day dealer advised to always fit the space saver on the rear. The AA chap told me it was a good job I had a space saver as recovery would have taken ages. Like Pete B I never purchased the Plug In because of no spare wheel. Our Gen 4 business edition came with space saver.

  6. Yes, The Bosch brake system sucks big time but anyway. The only noninvasive solution that do not includes drilling the calipers is ugly but it works. I am reborn since the beginning of the year and my car is completely silent again. I don't know if it is legal in your country but I am totally fine to remove the spring any time I have MOT. When I am not lazy enough to find spring with suitable length I'll remove the metal wire. I did it like that as proof of concept. It also works for Corolla.

  7. Late to this party I know but I had the same issue as BooBoo2, with my 2011 2.2 D4D with manual EPB. The symptom was, if the EPB was activated with the brake pedal depressed, for example on a hill start, the message "release parking brake" appeared. Release was very slow, followed by "check parking brake" on the next actuation. After checking and re-checking the fit and bleed, I noticed that the hole on the parking brake actuator lever on the (pattern) replacement caliper was slightly oversized and a loose fit on the pin. I swapped out the actuator lever for the one of the old caliper and the system then worked fine.

  9. Apparently they didn't or they changed their definition of commercial. A lot of apps etc. all seemed to have been affected this Spring & removed services that relied on Google mapping/Streetview etc.

  10. The brake vacuum pump can start making noise. Mine was changed at 180tkm when toyota service would have done it on next service (195tkm). Cost me ~450€ with the price of the part included. And just so you know EPB is one unit for both rear brake saddles. So if saddle jams still you can get away with just saddle change. There is two wires coming from EPB unit. Unit can still work as it is but wires can break and at they say that all has to be changed as a unit. 950€ in Finland.

  11. Just a 1990s Toyota doing what 1990s Toyota's do.
