Yaris Hybrid 2016

Hi

I just purchased my first Toyota Hybrid XP13 and like it.

An easy and smooth ride.

One thing I notice about the car what I am not used to. The engine combustion sound at idle is a little different - sounds a little like a sewing machine and perhaps a little noisy. At speed I hardly notice it.

Here is how it sounds:

Is this because of the way the engine is being controlled by the ECU? Is it different from a normal non hybrid combustion engine?

I am looking for a technical explanation if someone could tell me.

Thanks in advance.

Kind regards

JCT-DK

The "sewing machine" noise is coming from the head. It's the valve train that makes that noise, and is completely normal.

I am glad to hear that.

Do you know if the hybrid combustion engine is being driven differently from a regular engine?

 Thanks 😊

On this video at 0:44 the first few seconds after initial start up the engine is misfiring and knocking sound can be heard. This can be as a result of many things, blocked egr, coolant, oil, or fuel leak into cylinders, bad quality petrol , dirty air filter or throttle body. If it does it every cold start you will need a hybrid specialist to see your car. If it’s only once in a while then it should be ok. Use quality fuels e5 99, or add fuel additives. Service the car if needs to and if 100k miles or more think about egr system cleaning. The noise could also be from the timing chain tensioner too. There are very similar these noises and sometimes difficult to catch what exactly is at first sign but definitely this clip at 0:44 the engine sounds odd.

Okay thanks for your technical explanation.

Mine has drove 97.000 km. I am the second owner.

I will try to make a video clip at cold start and ask if it sounds ok.

Kind regards

Good, happy to hear it. The cold start should be recorded at least after an overnight of inactivity or two or more days. And try to notice any similar knocking noises on cold starts after only few hours of not been used.
Thanks

Great thanks.

Is this knocking sound the only or most important thing to look out for regarding engine reliability?

Does the engine has issues with the timing chain in general getting loose?

I don’t know about these particular engines as I haven’t work on , I know about the bigger 1.8 hybrids that been used in Corolla, Auris, Prius.
They usually are very reliable. Timing chains lasts lifetime , no need service, only regular oil changes. Sometimes in some cases the timing chain tensioner can go bad but this is usually at higher miles like 150000+ miles. The issue those usually have are egr related and this also comes at higher miles, 100k or more. It can be sorted with cleaning, no need to replace expensive components, just labour intensive. Perhaps the Yaris 1.5 will be very similar as it sounds similar at least but let see what Yaris owners will say. You can do a video of yours and we will look at it and take it from there . No need to worry for now. , we had only commented on the video from YouTube. 👍

I also have a question regarding engine start.

Do I have to engage the break when pushing the start button to start the Engine?

I heard somewhere that it could be started by pushing the start button followed by pressing lightly the Gaspedal?

I am used to first ignition on and the starting the engine but a salesman advised me against it because it could wear out the 12 v Battery.

Thanks 😀

Yes, press and hold brake pedal to switch the car on (READY mode). The 12V Battery is only there to support systems when switched off, and while it does have an "accessory" mode (NO READY light), it is ill-advised to use it.

The 12V Battery is very small as it is not used to start the engine. It is only ~36 AH, and will go flat in ~3 weeks if the car is not used at all in that time.

Good catch on the mis-fire at the start. Mine used to do that when cold, but now I run premium fuel in it (99 octane, E5), it hasn't done it in a long time.

As a side note, the difference in price between "regular" petrol (95 octane, E10) and premium (typically 99 octane, that may or may not be E5) isn't worth worrying about. Use the higher octane premium, always.

PS: Your car is immaculate. Mine looks like hell.

Ok thanks.

I find the transition from electric mode to combustion very smooth however I still hear the engine turning on with a deep kind of grumble not much but audible.

I guess this would be normal?

Thanks.

The misfire is not my car. It’s a clip from YouTube.

I will try to make a clip of a cold start myself and let you guys hear it if it sounds ok.

It's normal. I have a 2016 too, owned for 5 years, not one issue whatsoever.  Moving on to a new MK4 2023 next.

Don't listen to the engine, when in park the engine acts as a generator, the throttle does nothing, you can't rev it in Park or Neutral (it does this to protect the gearbox and motors/generators)

it's not till the transition from electric to petrol does the power from the engine transfer to the wheels, Hybrid is a very different driving style to all other types

It will take time to get used to, smoothness and being light on the throttle is the key

Yes i am a beginner for sure and trying to figure it out. I am glad you guys can help me out on all my issues.

Yes the petrol engine is like nothing else I have listened to. The way it sounds. But it’s nice to drive and quit powerful.

I just want to be sure that nothing is wrong.

My Yaris is a 2016 Style edition with leather seats and led back lights.

Two more things I noticed during use:

When I started this morning at 13 degrees Celsius it started up in EV mode instead of firing up the engine. The morning before it did start up the petrol engine at first.

Should’nt it always start the petrol engine at first?

Then I seem to feel that there is a little bit of shaking when going from EV mode to petrol mode. I am not sure about this but if it could be a fault I would bring it back to the dealer where I still has 1 year of warranty.

 Thanks.

Hi,

these cars as mentioned in earlier posts has their engines working in different modes to do different things like warm up process which content 4 stages and engine can sound differently going through all of these, then when engine is running to recharge the Battery and when to propel the car. Could be anything in between. You should not worry too much about it as long as you have no dashboard warning lights the noises and car behaviour you will learn with the time. Just make sure the car is serviced on time, fill up good quality petrol e5 99 preferably, check tyres are correct pressure on cold, and that’s pretty much all. Another important thing about hybrids is to keep Battery cooling fan vent unobstructed all the time and replace filter if the car has one or clean the vent. Use AC in summer or all the time, and heating in winter, you can set your hvac in auto mode with ac on.
For the noise from the video we had commented, the misfire one they all does it from time to time but not many owners have noticed. It’s not a big deal if it happens once in a while. It is a sign of something goes bad but only if it happens on every cold start.
Toyota hybrids rarely goes wrong and if they do they will display warning messages on the dashboard together with a warning lights. Enjoy your car, do the basic service, and don’t worry about it.

Thanks i will try not to worry 😀.

But do you if this transition between electric and petrol mode is suppose to be totally smooth?

I read about some Prius owners talking about the car jerking when shifting between the modes?

Am I worrying too much?

It seems normal to me. You will notice the shake and loud engine working because of being stationary, Yaris doesn't have good noise insulation, nothing to worry about. Tony gave some good explanation. My car had 5 years of trouble free motoring in my ownership so far.

Thanks i am glad to hear that everything seems normal.

I was scared that something in the transmission was worn out already?

Well just be glad you don't have a Mk4 - It's even worse due to the 3-cylinder engine!!
