Anyone gone from an Aygo to an Aygo-X ?

Great mpg folks!  As I live rurally, I usually get somewhere close to the official figures, so we'll see.  Still about 1.5 months away from getting mine (hopefully)  🤞

I am actually really surprised by this comment, I have had 4 Aygos with my highest miler one doing 35k a year for 3 years solid. I cruised and commuted in that car every day, and when I wanted the power I would absolutely nail it and let that 3 cylider scream up the revs, and it soon got going. Some may think that was abusing it, but they actually rev much higher than people think before getting anywhere near the red.. it’s a lot about momentum. I took that aygo from 1800 miles up to ~105k and it didn’t miss a beat and was always main dealer serviced on time.. commuted all over the uk and Europe. Agreed they are not fast.. but they are more than upto the job and will take it well. 

people are just now used to having lots of ample spare unused power making the feeling of cruising and overtaking less strenuous.

This will make you laugh, me and the missus drove our aygo from Wiltshire to Cologne Germany (~1000 mile round trip) with a roof box on for the Xmas markets 2 years in a row and Belgium another year.. we would go for a long weekend with a light overnight bag for a few nights. (So empty car and box) we would do loads of Xmas shopping at the markets and load the car and box with wine, pallets of beer, cheeses, meats, you name it.. we came back with the car proper loaded and revving out 😂. I just kept the speed down and cruised back with ease. 
 

Great memories, and it wouldn’t have been the same without the Aygo lol

When I was waiting for a new VW Touareg to be built (I had just rejected the previous one due to it being a misbuild), my wife and I travelled to France in her Aygo for 3 weeks in 2012 with our Dalmatian dog on the back seat and the boot full of dog food/bed. 

We took two small squashy bags for ourselves and did about 1450 miles. On the plus side, the car was always a bit stilted due to a life of shortish journeys but after this, it had a new lease of life and was much livelier 🤣

Yeah I think it's just most people are averse to revving engines highly - It's why I think diesels were so popular when the government started encouraging people to get them, as the torque band is just right for how most people drive, where you get stacks of torque without having to rev the engine.

It only tends to be hooligans like me who like revving out an engine to the limiter for fun

I'm trying to picture it with a roof box and so loaded down that its bouncing off the suspension stops!

Great comment, I've been on a motorway trip to Leicestershire today, and with a couple of points on the M1 being reduced to 50mph due to roadworks, nobody was going faster than me anyway.

So...  at 105 k, do you have any idea of your oil consumption  ?

I don't want to drive any car revving it to 6000 rpm. I am simply not enjoying it. That's also why I don't want the cvt.

Will have to go back to the turbo powered engines again in some time.

I wouldn't mind the revving if real power came in exchange for it. But with the aygoX cvt and auris 1.8 hsd, I didn't get any power for the noise it makes.

I couldn’t give any precise figures, but I always had my car serviced at the main dealer so it had the right oil. I also never had any reports of it having low oil at change time. I always checked my oil monthly due to the miles I did and had a litre bottle in the boot encase of top ups. The only time I had to top up was between 70 - 80k for some reason it used a bit, but never again.. I was having an oil change roughly every 4 months with doing 35k per yr.

Sure helps.

It tells me that also people who drove this engine up to a rather respectable >100k and didn't drive like +3000 rpm is a big sin, still had an engine that didn't consume oil.

So... that leaves open the possibility that a well maintained daihatsu 1.0 3cyl just starts consuming oil due to bad maintenance (in your case : not !) or really high age.

It's a positive conclusion.

The 1KR has proven to be a very reliable engine - I don't think it has any common oil burning issues except where it's been abused (And by abused I don't even mean being ragged a lot, but just not being maintained properly). The fact that you can get off-the-shelf turbo and supercharger kits for it just show how robust it is.

Went to a specialist here.. he didn't see a good possibility in putting a supercharger or turbo on the car. He quoted me a price of higher than 10.000 euro if they tried.

How much would be the kits you guys know about?

About oil burning  :

I never drive a car long enough to know about the aygo and what will happen in time. From what i read the aygo engine is known to burn oil after more than 70-100 k miles but then I think you guys know from using the car yourself that it is not necessarily the truth always.

For me its obvious that with the carter containing only 2.8 liter (same for ford ka II qnd fiat 500 i think) you cant really stretch up the maintenance without having to pay for it in a way of more engine wear.

So... I have decided already I will change oil every year or after 10.000 (!) Km and not 15.000 km.

That is 6000 miles and not 9.000 miles.

I would (!) do it on 15.000 if I do f.e. 45.000 km a year.

Thinking about the generality of maintenance intervals advised by toyota, I think a 5 liter oil content needs less changing than 2.8.

It won't hurt if I do like that.

Someone posted a link to a kit a while back (Albeit out of stock), if I find it I'll stick it here. Wasn't cheap though, but that sort of modification never is - Note that I was just saying such things exist, not that you should do it; IMHO* you'd be better off putting that money towards a car more suited to what you're after (Like... say.... a Mk4 Yaris Hybrid 130?   )

 

BTW what do you mean known to burn oil? After 100k miles I'd expect most engines to start using a bit of oil as the tolerances wear out a bit, but as long as it wasn't as extreme as the sort of oil loss I was seeing on my 2009 Mk2 Yaris 1.33VVTi then I don't think it'd need worrying about. Even my Mk1 D4D would use a bit of oil over time (Only really noticeable if I was hooning it about  ), and IIRC** I had that up to 100k miles before it got KHAAAAN'd.

 

As for doing more oil changes, absolutely no harm in doing that and may even help resell value as it shows the car's been looked after. The engine will definitely like it as it'll help keep the chain in especially good condition!
