  1. So got around to looking at the old Carina E at the weekend, shes a 1996 1.6 gli (4A-FE) Liftback model - one owner since new, 191000 on the clock, my father parked it up about 5 years ago as he picked up another car and its been growing moss ever since. Charged the battery over night but it wasn't strong enough to get the engine to crank so threw it out and got one from the breaker - stuck it in and she started first time! impressive. The wing mirror had been knocked off before it was parked up and tapped on, so got one on ebay, think it cost £5 - got that put on. So its going to be my new project - needs a few more bits before i consider testing her. Engine management light is on so will try get the code from that and see whats up. Exhaust is blowing - the hole is in end section - anyone know if an exhaust from a Generation 1 Avensis would suit? I saw one at the breakers at the weekend. She will be due a belt after being sat there that long. Also the door rubber on drivers door has broken at the top so will need replacing. Breakers yard again i think. Also i noticed after she ran for a while after warm-up, she seemed to mis-fire, struggled. not cutting out just not running right. Maybe an injector? I see that they can give a bit of trouble. I will do as much as i can myself, but my knowledge is basic enough, e.g. oil, filters, plugs, brakes etc - but wouldn't dream of doing a belt change etc. Interior is immaculate in this car. No pets, kids, smokers etc since new. Paint is red so its faded now. Will read up on cutting/rubbing compounds etc to bring her back. Bonnet however has large patches where the lacquer has lifted to will see if i can get another red one or else paint it. Will post a few pics when i get a chance and also keep progress report on here. Thanks for reading.

  11. All done guys.... worth every bit of hassle it was to do but having driven it now what a different car..... that extra gear makes all the difference trust me, power wise, and a lot quieter on the road too while travelling Heres my write up..... Celica 6 speed gearbox 1999 - 2005 out of a 140 bhp car - I chose this one as the Avensis has 127bhp. Problems encountered - 1. Gear selector on the Avensis 5 speed box is at the rear of the gearbox, on the Celica 6 speed it is on the front of the box. Avensis cables dont reach but Celica ones do as they are just under 1.2m in length. 2. The gear lever cradle in Avensis is of no use with the Celica cables as it forces the cables forward, the Celica cradle is required & does fit but needs re-drilled/repostiioned on the prop tunnel bulkhead. 3. A small part of the plastic console fascia where the gearstick gaitor affixes needs cut out to accomodate the gear cradle being further back on the bulkhead, basically it needs cut out roughly 1" depth by about 2" in length just to the side of the handrake handle. Tip to this is when u get the cradle & gearstick try & get the leather gaitor also as u can destich it at the top & bottom and basically use the bit u de-stitch to cover what you have to cut out. other than that.... thats it..... after a few headscratching moments...hopefully this will help you if u choose to do it.

  12. Thats it all done - no crap unreliable 5 speed gearbox anymore :-) .... a bit of a bugger to do but driving it after it was done was the reward. What a difference it has made overall to power, and even quietened engine down too having that extra gear..... i'd advise anyone to do it.... :-)

  13. Hi Guys, Thanks for all he advice. really appreciated. I had occasion to replace all the trims on the car as they were lifting at the ends. I acquired the full set of oem for just over £30. I duly removed the old ones (which curled up on removal) and half the tape was still stuck to panels. To remove the glue I used white spirit on the glue( really soaked it) and left it to soak till very soft I used a couple of rags to remove the residue. When the lumpy stuff was off I washed the affected area in white spirit and left to dry. The new trims went on easily and have been there a few years now. I suggest if removal from a scrapped vehicle you arm yourself with a paint scraper to ease the trims off (easing them off at various intervals along the top of the trim trying not to bend or pull the trim (doesn't matter if you damage the door). Once off, apply the white spirit on the glue on trim and scrape residue off with scraper. (careful not to get spirit on trim due to white marks being left) Apply strong double sided tape (as thin as you can get ) and fit trims to your car.) Hope this helps. Will investigate and see if new trims still available on e bay and get back to you

  15. Serious question here? Does anyone actually bother reading the manual that comes free with their car? Most of the answers to this thread are in there.

  16. Makes me wonder whether the windscreen had already been damaged externally, and the knock on the mirror was the last resort. As regards the mirror, the ball should push back into the socket - perhaps cooling the ball down with some ice or cold water or some lubrication may make it easier to get the two parts back together. Failing that, you could see whether the Autoglass technician can do it. If you need a new mirror, you could send Parts King a personal message, detailing what car you have and what you want, and he should be able to provide a price - for Parts King go to the Community page, and scroll down to Sponsors Corner and Lindop Toyota. This may match your car - http://www.amazon.co.uk/MAYBELLINE-NAIL-VARNISH-POLISH-Gunmetal/dp/B007X36IZS

  17. The Tour de France is coming to my town this year, and guess what? They've replaced ALL our roads that they'll be racing along. All ripped up and smoothed out at huge expense. I guess they don't want the French to see just how knackered and worn out our roads actually are. But the end result are roads we could only have dreamed of. They're like the ones you get in France, smooth, quiet and freshly painted white lines - just how they should be. Seriously they're really good now. No dips into grate covers, no faded white lines, no dips, lumps or bumps or pot holes - just super smooth highway. Only trouble is they'll all wear out at the same time in 5 years and they'll be no budget to fix them all at once :( You can't have it all I guess. Also, once you turn off the race going roads you're back in pothole city :(
