  1. If you can get one with less than 10k on the clock and less than 1 year old I'd definitely have it serviced by Toyota whether it had been done by the seller or not. The cost of the service compared to the cost of a failed warranty claim is peanuts.

  3. I am the reverse to you. My Auris Tourer (has hill start) I reverse down my drive, its a gentle slope (I did not steal that word off Clarkson lol) The car is always left in gear, I learned to drive about 37 years ago, when cars and brakes were pants. It is good practice to leave a car in gear (as the Highway code says) you never know when something fails, a cable may break, or you just might not pull the brake on hard enough. It always pays to have a plan B, I would sooner leave it in gear even if it never fails, than leave it out of gear only to roll away if something goes wrong Kingo

  4. A simple test would be to unplug the two door loom sockets and get your multi-meter out to see if there's any current on one of the unused pins whilst the indicators are switched on. Even if there isn't it's a relatively simple job to add a new feed for the wiring on the newer style mirrors. See my recent thread about the indicators being too quiet - there's an image of the relevant socket on the final post.

  5. Thank you Konrad. My post was a bit tongue in cheek, and I realise what op was asking, I posted to hopefully deter anyone who does know how to disable the alarm, not to reveal on forum. Hopefully it can't be done. I am being paranoid aren't I. :D

  6. Auris manual page 146: When parking on a hill, shift the shift lever to 1 or R. If necessary, block the wheels.

  7. Whether it is a slope, an incline, a mountainside or a hill, putting the vehicle in the appropriate gear would prevent the car from rolling away.

  8. I have said this before, but when the motoring mags review cars, performance and handling was placed high. So if a car seemed 'boring', it would not rank as high as a 'dynamic' or great performance. The Ford Mondeo, Peugoet 406, VW Passat and Nissan Primera were rated better cars than the Avensis in Autocart dated 19 November 1997. I still have the magazine! Now how many of these rival cars do you see on the compared to the Avensis? In 'Motoring Week' section of the same magazine, Editor -in-Chief Steve Cropley whilst agreeing with the verdict given by the review, was impressed with the quiet engine, suspension and most the 'truly excellent' fuel economy. Now performance is becoming less relevant on todays road with speed cameras, and traffic calming. Then there is the servicing, reliability and running costs. Build quality - apart from a few dents, my car is mostly rust free. I polish my car after washing. The water beads off my car when it rains. I think Toyota got most things right and the early vvti engine oil burning issue, has been the only major design issue. It is perceptions that can be the real issue. Also majority of owners not looking after cars due to a makers reputation, like reliability. As FastBob has mentioned some don't care what is under the bonnet, just put fuel in it and drive. When signs of a fault appear, the owner ignores these signs and drive around them, oblivious of the pending breakdown or danger. If it was not for the MOT, some cars would be moving death traps! And there are some without MOT, cue ANPR. The oil burning issue caught out owners who thought you only checked the oil once in a while, because they may have owned a Toyota Carina or Avensis pre-vvti. I say get a newer car as parts get harder to find for older, especially if they are bespoke.

  9. Hi, I've just changed the sidelight bulb on my Avensis, Took me about 5mins to do. After removing the engine trim covers, all it took was to put my hand down into the gap and rotate the bulb holder 90deg anti-clockwise (looking from the back of the light unit.) didn't need to disconnect the wiring, once loose you can replace the bulb and reseat the holder. job done.
