  1. Fuel probably not that significant. Make sure you get Redex Fuel System Cleaner

  2. Try some Redex in the fuel to clean the injectors (and might help with any constriction related to the EGR valve). You will need to add a small amount with each tankful over a number of fill-ups before any noticeable improvement.

  4. An update on the DRL situation. As both the main bulb and the strip were out on mine I feared the worst and took it Toyota. All it needed was a bulb! There is a weird quirk of these lights in that if the main DRL filament bulb blows the little separate strip of lights at the top of the headlamp unit stop working too. Mine would actually flash on for a fraction of a second then go off which had made me mistakenly think there was an electrical fault somewhere Once the main bulb was replaced the strip also started working as normal!

  5. Toyota are the only people that would make/made a dedicated harness and both part numbers are contained with the instructions given, but two things to note: 1. Toyota part was a kit the main part # PZ426-P0240-00 Contained the speakers, grilles, fittings and dedicated harness from front to rear then depending on how many speakers the car originally had there was an additional adapter harness the fit behind the radio to connect into the to new rear speaker harness, for your car with 4 standard speakers the adapter was PZ417-B0240-60, beyond these two numbers there are no other part numbers available. 2. These accessories only fit an old model the newest of which are now over 11 years old and chances of the Toyota kit being available still is slim to nil. Without the dedicated harness you will have to strip out the radio and work out which terminals are for the rear speakers and wire in your own harness.

  8. Hi Konrad, Nice to hear someone is following the saga! as you put it. I have indeed bought a nice car with a bad engine.. It could be permanent, who knows really; there's no telling if it'll fail or not etc. I read through that post a couple weeks ago I've heard that the engine needs a new block and head etc as well; i think you're right there. I'm just not sure what to do.. I think my love for the car is getting in the way of things.. I'm not sure where i stand to be honest with you.. His company name is on the paper work he gave me when i bought the car from him, at his house so in a way he has sold it through his business so to speak.. I dropped the car off to him yesterday so i'm not sure if work has begun on the engine just yet. I'm not sure what to do!!!!!!!! ARGHH. My dad knows cars etc and he said he's more inclined to get the repair done etc. Its lasted this long on its current gasket he says. My girlfriend says get the repair done etc and so does my mum.. I know they don't know as much as i do on the matter so they only see the basics of it all but are they wrong? are they right? I don't know.. I really want to keep the car because as said many times, it's immaculate inside and out, plenty of meat on the brakes and tyres were replaced all with the same brand not that long ago; they're pretty much new.. All the injectors were replaced along with a new water pump by Toyota not that long ago as well. Plus i got it cheap too. I keep hammering on about it and blabbering on like a turkey i know. Sorry about that. I have been thinking about a 1.6 valvematic but they're a bit out my price range at the moment. Maybe over summer after working a bit i'll get one. Thanks for your reply Konrad

  9. Toyota say that these heads (& I think blocks) should not be skimmed, presumably that is why they did exchanges. That doesn't mean that they can't be though as I am sure that 1 or 2 people on here have had it done. He is still asking you to contribute £350 towards work (& until they take it apart they won't even know if there is block damage from "gasket shuffle"). & again, replacing the gasket won't remove the cause of the problems. I would reject it & get my money back but it's not my car/money so ultimately it is your decision.

  10. Hi Lewis, Sorry to hear about the experience you're having with your SR180, had a similar thing myself a few years ago with a VW and a shot auto gearbox, dealer was very unhelpful, eventually part exchanged it with another car at another dealer who surprisingly didn't ask too many questions! With regards to an Auris hybrid, you can get them for a lot less with more miles, I bought mine from a Toyota dealer, 69K mileage, 60 plate T spirit with all the bells and whistles, except satnav, last July for £7k all in, they even had a 0% finance offer for 3 years (which I did not take up in the end). Quick autotrader search suggests these are running more around the £6k mark at the moment. The reason why I am not put off by slightly high mileage is that in my experience, having had a 07 Prius since 2011, bought with 80k on the clock, these hybrids are very reliable. As embarrassing as it may be, I bought the Prius without even test driving it (from a shady independent second hand car dealer no less!), which could of course have potentially been disastrous I admit, but it had full Toyota service history, which can be verified online. It has just passed its 5th MOT in my possession, with not a single advisory on any of them. The only non-routine servicing I had done was the replacement of the front brake pads and discs last year at a 105k miles. In terms of servicing, I just think of it as whatever is saved on road tax goes towards the servicing, so you end up even or maybe even better off at the end of the year compared to a regular car. The yearly warranty extension on the hybrid system after 100k also provides peace of mind. In terms of real life MPG on the Auris, I do only London city driving, most trips being not more than about 5 miles each way, I get about 50 mpg in the summer and currently in this weather, about 45. So, although much lower MPG than what Toyota claim, it is not bad at all compared to a 'normal' car for the types of journeys I do. Hope the issue with your SR180 comes to a satisfactory close and you can get on your way to searching for a new car. Keep us updated and do let us know if you have anymore questions. Best of luck :)

  11. Does the paperwork have company or VAT details on it or just or just Joe Bloggs ? i.e. does it look like paperwork from a business or a private seller? I may be a cynic but the possibility exists that he knew that the car had a problem & that every time that he sold it through the business it would come right back under the new Consumer Rights Act. You look out/stand up for for your interests/rights because nobody else is going to if you don't push it.

  12. Hi alan333. I was trying to be a little bit self-depricating in my post, just to help anyone else with these odd symptoms. As for the so-called 'professionals', we'd already taken the problem to our local garage twice, plus spoken to a mechanic friend who has his own garage business, and even they were unable to find the fault. I've also read numerous posts on how even main-dealers have struggled with this simple problem. The idea behind the post is to point a solution at the problem, which anyone can then recommend to their local professional if necessary. The reason I didn't get my own hands dirty initially was just due to a lack of time; we both work full time, shifts etc., not forgetting our lovely British weather! The big question though is: Why were all my apostrophies stripped out of my original main post? :-)
