  1. A Toyota dealer may be able to confirm whether it has had a replacement engine. The 2.0 litre diesel can Alsop be affected by the same issues as the 2.2. The 1.4 diesel can have issues, albeit different to the 2.0/2.2. The 1.4, 1.33 and 1.6 petrols seem problem-free. Depending what is important to you, of these, the 1.33 offers the best economy and the 1.6 reasonable performance.

  2. The problems with the AD series diesel head/head gasket issue are that: a) they cost so much to fix properly - it isn't just a case of replacing the gasket as it doesn't resolve the underlying cause b ) you can't predict which ones will suffer. The risk seems to increase with more power & yes, it's very small nos. but if you get a bad 'un it is back to a) - they cost so much to fix! I am getting on for being an old codger & my needs/wants have changed since i was a youth. I would seriously consider a hybrid but that probably isn't for you. If you are looking at older cars on a budget then any modern turbo-diesel is a risk long term as they have so many parts (turbo, DMF, DPF, injectors etc.) that are at risk & expensive to replace. There has not been any obvious performance Toyotas for a generation. :(

  3. Hmm... the "build your 2016 Prius" is now on the Toyota web site and it looks like you can specify 15" wheel on the top two trim levels and get a £400 rebate to boot - AND a no cost spare wheel appears to be optional too! I'm starting to warm to the top Excel model if that's the case (the only one with leather trim, and plenty of other toys [but no sunroof *]) - the only thing it has that I really don't want is the auto wipers, but apparently you can snip a wire and it goes back to the old variable intermittent setup. [* which suits me but I know will disappoint some others]

  4. As gloucester mentioned UK speedos have both mph & kph so don't see that being an issue.

  5. Do you mean 2015 Gen 3 model as opposed to the new 2016? If the former, this might help: http://biwel.com/pmb01/Gen 3 Prius dimensions.jpg With the mirrors folded they stick out about 25mm per side more than the wheel arches, so I'd say 1745 + 50 = 1795mm (5' 11")

  6. ok so just a quick update on this. Yesterday I changed the battery after waiting a couple of weeks for some day light after work. After I had changed the battery I decided to check out misfire issue before I send it to car abattoir. I started the car after replacing the battery and it started in its crazy way with three cylinders and flashing check engine light. Then i smelt petrol and I looked under the hood to find out that the whole front of the engine was flooded with petrol. I could then hear the "slurping" noise coming from the injectors and to my horror, injector 4 was just letting out fuel every where. I quickly turned the engine off and had to take the rail and all the injectors out. To my horror, injector 4 seal o-ring that goes in the fuel rail was totally mangled and had become seriously bad oval shape. which meant it wasnt sitting properly and let all the fuel out. Then I thought well now I have flooded the cylinders as well and I doubt my car is going to start. Afterwards when i took the injector out of course due to pressure, the fuel just started pouring out of the fuel rail. I got my spare injector from the boot and then replaced the 4th injector. Then dried the front well of the block, restarted the car no fuel leakage. good, but no difference. still wobbly and mad. Then I thought one last try and got my OBDII reader out. Cleared out all the codes and restarted the car, to my joy, misfire had to move from cylinder 3 to cylinder 4. This was great news as I posted in the forum that I had swapped coil pack 3 with 4. (my original misfire was on cylinder 3). Then I went to double check this by taking power supply clip for each injector off and found that 1,2,3 when disconnected make a difference to the engine running where as 4 doesnt do anything but it cant be the injector coz I have seen it squirting fuel every where. My conclusion, its definitely the coil pack. Original diagnosis might have been hindered by battery being all messed up. it was amazingly low. I have ordered a used coilpack from ebay for 13.50 with a 3 months guarantee. Who knows my beastie might not need to go to car abattoir and it ll find home with another loving and caring person. Regards, Waqar
