  1. I picked up my 21 plate Hybrid Design ex-demonstrator in September with 2000 miles on the clock. First brim to brim in October was 61.56 mpg, second in November was 62.41. My current indicated figure after 220 miles on this tankful is 54.6, so the next brim to brim could be low to middle 50s. Here in north Wales nearly every road out of town is uphill, but that goes with downhill on the return journey. We do mainly short trips around town, with monthly twenty or thirty mile runs to hospital, all on the hilly bit of the A55. My last Toyota but one was a Gen3 Prius, my overall for four years was 58.7mpg. You just have to love these hybrids, don't you?

  2. Not just new cars, I've got a colleague at work who gets a 18-24 month old Toyota and PCPs it for 3 years - then repeat! He gets the benefit of a car in warranty (obviously now 10 years) and has a vehicle that he can afford. Quite a few at work have purchased their Toyota cars from Cazoo etc due to the warranty being so good on Toyota's!

  3. Usually daylight running lights have no warning light on the dashboard - because they are always on with the engine running and the handbrake off.

  4. We've had service plans on our last 10 new cars - the current Hyundai came with a free 3 year service plan as part of the deal. Prior to these 10, on our 11th and 12th new cars, we had 2 years free servicing from the manufacturer. The service plans we've paid for, have all been negotiated down from the first offer. For us, rather than being poor money managers, it is the convenience of knowing what our service costs are for the next however many years, and we have yet to have problems with the dealers we've used.

  5. TBH aside from being shielded from sneaky price rises, which usually get announced, there isn't any major benefit to service contracts unless you're the sort of person who's really bad at managing your finances and needs to have have enforced small regular payments. I prefer paying per service as it means I'm not tied to a particular dealer garage, should my patience finally run out... Yup! Absolutely! They would be happy to fix your puncture for free even then! You just need to make sure you book it in 2 weeks in advance and be prepared to wait several hours...

  9. Well I don't really know what they were like on the Mk2, but I was kinda expecting a car built in 2021 by a company priding itself on its QC to be symmetrical.

  10. Have you turned off your engine while was running? If yes that can be the reason. Perhaps next time wait for the ice to run it’s cycles and switch off itself then turn off ignition and charge if it’s smells the same. 👍

  11. Just depends how dark the grey is. Road dirt tends to dry light greyish and so is hid when the car is silver grey.. Obviously colours are personal choice, I would prefer a white car then a black car. I have owned a few white but never owned a black one.

  12. There is no symbol for the DRLs. I suspect the car is turning on the main lights. This is one of the slightly annoying things in the Mk4 that I've complained about in another thread - The car has no 'Off' for the lights, only Auto, and if it thinks it is a bit dark (Which basically means always in mornings and evenings, now that we're in winter, and all day if it's overcast!) it will switch on the main lights which illuminates the sidelights symbol on the dash. I'm assuming that's what it is anyway - You can check yourself as you have a Design model: It'll have LED main beams, and you should be able to see them reflecting off the car in front, even in daytime, as they are super bright!

  13. Go on, I'll bite😉 That's a bit of a sweeping statement/generalisation implying the only benefit is for poor money managers. Here's my own view, don't buy what you can't afford to run in the first place, which includes all servicing/maintenance (either service plan or pay as you go), insurance, putting fuel in it, oh and don't forget the depreciation cost.

  14. Is it just petrol fumes? Is fairly normal if so - Had similar in all my non-hybrid petrol cars if I just fired them up for a few seconds to move them. Lots of unburnt petrol in the exhaust. This is partly why ICE efficiency is so awful when the engine is cold! It's one reason the Mk4's reluctance to go into EV mode, ever, is a bit annoying, as if I could move it without the engine starting up for such things that would be ideal, but it always fires the engine up when I turn it on!

  15. I opted for the service plan and noticed that the price of services went up a couple of weeks later, never mind any year on year cost increases, so taking out the plan was a no-brainer really. Like to haggle? It's a case of if you don't ask you definitely don't get so see what they are prepared to offer as a sweetener, nothing ventured, nothing gained etc.

  17. I got my Corolla nearly 2 years ago now. I managed to get a £60 discount on the service plan because I complained that the vehicle didn't have a space saver wheel when I took delivery. So if there is anything you don't like when your Corolla arrives it's always worth haggling over something else, like a service plan.

  18. The two main advantages of a service contract/plan are: 1). You spread the servicing costs over the period of the plan, and, 2). You fix the servicing costs for the duration of the plan - avoiding any price rises. Depending on the dealer, you may be offered other incentives such as a discount on parts and labour for any work outside of the contract/plan. Some dealer groups offer their own service plans, which may be cheaper yet still satisfy Toyota's service requirements. Plus, depending on the age of the vehicle, or how long you intend to keep it, additional items such as MOTs can be included (which again fixes your costs).

  20. Yes, it does, but you can do the same thing by having a savings account, and for the annual bills you put aside either 1/12 or 1/10 maybe to give some leeway, every month, then you pull out what you need to pay those annual bills, like car insurance, services, holidays and W.H.Y. it does help if you can manage a spreadsheet, it makes everything easier.

  21. To be honest we had grey in mind until we saw a red HEV on the forecourt. The grey (when clean) looks very classy with the black roof. When dirty it isn’t a good look.

  24. Yesterday I drove into and out of central London for the first time this year. It's about a 60-mile trip each way for me on the A4 and M4. Much of the journey on the M4 between J12 at Theale and J3 before the services at Heston is under 50mph or 60mph speed limits due to the huge project to widen that whole stretch to 4 lanes. On my return journey late afternoon, I was part of the congested rush hour traffic flow that, pre pandemic, would normally see every lane nose to tail with vehicles travelling at 60mph, or faster if anyone got a chance. This is a moving landscape that needs serious attention to what everyone else is doing. I stopped at the westbound Heston services for a 'refreshment break' and then continued my journey. Nearly all of it was on the M4, so exclusively a motorway journey for over 30 of the 42 total miles for this part, with the traffic flow and speed ebbing and flowing throughout. I find adaptive cruise control not really ideal in these situations as the car tends to slow down/speed up in an over cautious manner in the former and with too much enthusiasm in the latter. In any case, given the extra attention needed on what others are doing, setting cruise control of any type isn't a good idea in my view. You need to be in control not the sensors. So I drove with caution, keeping to the low speed limit or lower depending on the traffic. A look through the metrics in the My T app for this journey showed my average speed at 47mph. That looks about right: actual speeds of 50mph or less for the journey between J3 at Heston and J8/9 at Maidenhead, and then 60mph or less from J8/9 to J12 at Theale. The screenshot shows fuel consumption of 68.2mpg, much better than I expected - I was thinking it might be in the low 60s, even high 50s. Perhaps that thinking is influenced by typical use on a motorway with generally higher travel speed with ACC in constant use, perhaps with some liberal acceleration here and there to get past bunches of slow traffic. It also shows that 39% of the journey was in EV mode, so using the battery. That's in line with my expectation. (Related: on my inbound journey earlier, driving in central London in very heavy and very slow stop/start traffic, EV use was 80% with mpg at 57.3 according to My T. A good scene-setter for pure EV in my future!) Either way, I find journey data like this really useful to understand better the capabilities of this hybrid car in tandem with my own driving behaviours and how I can improve it further. This isn't about mpg but overall behaviour. As a final note, the overall average info you see on your dashboard is also useful (for me, it's currently showing 62.2 mpg). But I find individual journey data even more useful. How do you see it all?

  25. I tend to check the last journey on MyT regularly - even if it is a short journey - for the same reasons: understand the car better and understand how I am using it better. I find the newer hybrid drivetrain is a very different beast from my previous Auris models so MyT lets me see how adjustments to my driving impact the numbers.

  30. I don't know if it applies with Toyota but if you look on eBay, there's firms that can work from a photo of your existing wheel nut pattern and supply a key. I did this twice with Vauxhall cars. Can't remember the exact firm but was fairly easy to find by searching eBay

  31. 'Refreshment break' is a polite euphemism for having a pee so there was no cost involved. I didn't spend a penny 😄 As for people charging up their EVs and spending money while that happens, each to their own. I imagine many could make a great case that buying a coffee from Starbucks or Costa while their car is charging is perfectly justifiable from the cost saving in not buying fuel especially at the prices motorway services charge.

  32. The cells have reduced capacity, a dip in voltage will make the electronics freak out the cold snaps over the last month will kill a weak battery + add in lockdown it will kill it off even quicker, If it's an AGM battery it will be a deep cycle type these have very different characteristics compared to a lead acid, and the testing methodology is different they require a low (current <4a) and slow charge what can take 48 hours, a resting AGM should read 12.5 -12.8v at 75% charge, full charged 12.8 - 13.4 - typical charging voltages are 14.6 to 14.8, but can pull up to 16v if the cells are <20% charge New battery time

  33. I can see how Hydrogen would work for vehicles which return to a base every day , buses , local delivery vehicles , short trip HGVs etc. If you can make the financials stack up and have your own bulk hydrogen tank then it could make sense.

  34. With PCP being nearly the same as a lease for many people (as they never plan to keep at the end of the contract) leasing directly from the manufacturer could be quite widespread in a few years time. When I was looking for a new car the only question I was asked was “what is your monthly budget?” I doubt many people have “bought” a Jaguar IPace or Porsche Tycan , I’m guessing most will be PCP and change in 2/3 years 🤔

  35. EVs will end up like a mobile phone, you'll lease/rent it for a fixed term and then give it back for the latest/better model! It'll be interesting to see what the offers are next month when ordering is opened...

  36. That is how most new car purchases are these days, hardly anyone "buys" the car. With EV's, the worry for customers is battery life/cost if they go wrong. You will see lots more opportunity to lease/hire/share cars in future, without the worry of repair bills

  37. Yes I guess if they let me PCP one for a similar price as I'm paying now I would consider it.

  38. Everything new is less quality then older stuff including the cars and Toyotas, that obvious., materials, workmanship, QC, everything, the only thing up are the prices! 😉

  39. I was thinking exactly the same, they want to lease these to breed confidence in the battery technology

  40. Not obsolete but answered and entirely logical, if they are comparable in most respects. Early adopters will not have a lower priced RAV to consider. More cautious drivers can continue with the RAV I expect further EV models will be designed as alternatives to existing ranges but their prices points will have to remain competitive across their competitors too.

  42. This is the way I found round the 255 song play list as I don't have any software, first pic is some of my play list how it lays it out from ripping, second pic is of the Albums I ripped, third pic is what it showed me in the Yaris head unit. I ripped 2 Albums but 1 was a double, Back to the 70's and Now 72, deleted the contents of the single Album and replaced it with 200 songs from my plays list, then deleted the contents of Now 72 Disc 1 with 200 songs and put what was left in the other, pic 4 shows then how many songs showing 439. As I said it wouldn't let me Title folders, I made on PC as it didn't recognise them but if it was an Album it would allow me to put 200 songs in each.

  44. That's not quite what happens in my car Andrue. I went out yesterday and set the sat nav to come home. After arriving home, I parked up and left the car. This morning I went on a short drive but the sat nav kicked in, trying to direct me back home. One of the reasons I was asking about turning the sat nav off.

  46. Hi John, welcome to Toyota Owners Club. As Lee above says, TOC is totally independent of Toyota the car maker, or Toyota dealerships. If you want to contact Toyota best do it through Customer Service. Your problem/query is something a lot of car users (all makes) are concerned about. If you feel you need to highlife your concerns it may be better to direct your letter to your local MP or the likes. Personally I would think it’s a waste of time, it’s job done as far as being seen to think of the environment.
