  1. Nice pictures, thanks for the review. Given my user name I must be the only one feeling any sort of satisfaction that it still has the Mutley battery 😉

  2. Ok, that will be us picking up the Blue Demon on April Fools day!! (not sure if that's good or bad 🤣) Eventually went with Admiral Gold for £606/yr. With the £255 refund from this car, that means our next year's insurance will be costing us £351/yr effectively. 🤩

  3. update, i brought it to a bodyshop new bumper ordered and my neighbour has paid the bill already just shy of £900.

  5. I don't think it's just one thing - My current theory is that a lot of the batteries were marginal to begin with and not in great shape, probably due to being sat around during covid or something, and when they got to people, those that didn't drive much (IIRC one poster immediately went on a 3 month holiday after taking possession of the car! ) didn't give them a chance to recover so they just continued to degrade and eventually fail, while people like me who immediately put it to work gave the battery a chance to recover with a good strong charge. Likely some of the batteries weren't so bad, so even with the low usage, were able to keep them going for a bit longer. I think the Yuasa is still the way to go though as it seems to just have better degradation resistance than the OE battery. That said, mine's coming up to 3 years on the OE battery with no issues, but I do drive a lot! (Or I should say, am stuck in slow moving traffic a lot )

  6. My Yaris Cross, when new, was left for 12 days. The following year for 15 days. Although I have a BM6 I forgot to check the voltage after the last lay up. No problems so far. I have another planned in June and will try and remember to check.

  9. Well after 7 years of amazing service I have swapped my wonderful Prius 'Percy' for a Lexus NX 350h 'Lester'. I have been looking to change for a while now, not because there was anything wrong, but just fancied a changed. I have been dithering over a UX for some time now, but the fact that it is quite an old design, just stopped me as the last thing I wanted was to order one and then I start seeing spy shots of the 2nd generation. That would be just my luck 😆 Test drove the BZ4X as they had amazing incentives on them, but I did not find it very comfortable due to its high floor. Thought about the 5th generation Prius, but as that would be over £40.000 for the Excel with metallic paint, I was not happy about paying 'Luxury' car tax on a non luxury car. Obviously I am paying it on the NX, but I accept that as it is what I would class as a luxury car. I have to say the price I got for the Prius is amazing, after 7 years I got 56% of what I paid for it. It was immaculate had only 23,000 miles and garaged every day from new. Every dealer who appraised it, could not get over the condition of it for a 7 year old car. It was a very emotional goodbye. See you over on the Lexus forum 😃

  10. Sorry, just my weird sense of humour. We get lots of posts saying how much is the reserve tank and why doesn't the car run out of fuel when the "range" is on zero. Just put fuel in the ruddy thing 🤣🤣🤣

  12. One thing to check - the D4D engines as they age can get problems with cold starting, taking a lot of cranking and white smoke, and it's not due to the glow plugs but other issues with the injectors or rail pressure. Once the engine is warm they're fine on subsequent starts and will start first time, but that first start can be rough. Ideally you want to see it start up from stone cold. But overall, 300k is a lot of miles, at that point there's a lot of stuff which will have either worn out and been replaced, or well on its way - water pump, alternator, aux belts, tensioners. I wonder if it's had some wheel bearings replaced. The later D4Ds had a timing chain, which didn't need replacing but at over 300k miles I'd wonder what condition that was in.

  16. Hi, yes I've got a CVT Aygo and have driven hybrid Yaris on loan. I think in terms of performance, the Yaris is overall a bit better on the roads, but because of my budget, I'll have to stick with my Aygos. I do like the Aygo though, the CVT has made the auto Aygo a lot better in terms of perfomance even though the engine is the same.

  17. I must admit I rubbished the notion that batteries were faulty and didn’t really accept that it wasn’t people just not using the car enough but then I got first hand experience of friends cars that were being used enough. I go a bit bleary eyed at the battery thread but there were contributors suggesting that the battery won’t recover. I’ve charged very neglected batteries in the past but these Mutlus won’t recover.

  18. Cyker is right , 60000 miles when easy and mostly motorway drives. In more moderate use and town drives if you don’t drive fast and furious style I think easily 25-30k + miles or 4+ years. In uk because of the salt during winter tyres tend to have accelerated ageing and got dry rot cracks as soon as year 3 or 4 and even if they have a good tread depth you still want to replace them as they become a risk. Also the cracks forms on inner side walls and even mot testers fail to spot these.

  19. Well maybe not as long as him; He's the tyre whisperer! My tyres tend to last 15-20k miles, but that's a lot of stop-start traffic (And it doesn't help that I keep launching the Mk4 when I'm at the front of traffic lights... I can't help it!! )

  20. We have a PHEV for a host of reasons. Most local journeys are in EV mode. However we also drive long distances (I am talking hundreds of miles at a time) for leisure, often towing, so the ICE comes into its own.

  23. Hi, I have no direct experience with these two but I can tell you that any Toyota/Lexus hybrids has very similar behaviour when driving at high speeds or uphill. The reasons is how the eCVT transmission works similarly to standard cvt without having anything physical in common. However with hybrids we have electric motor that helps the engine in any speeds so if you need to overcome these unnecessary high rpm dead noises you ca push further and sharper the accelerator and the car will respond immediately and engage more the electric side of the hybrid system providing faster acceleration and more natural feel over standard cvt petrol car. Also in cvt cars and in all autos actually the bigger the engine the less high rpm you will get under heavy acceleration. Aygo x vs Yaris hybrid, the hybrid is many times better in all driving situations.

  24. That's excellent mileage. One set should last me years then, as long as I keep the pressures right.
    2 points
  25. For my car i have pressure set just one idea higher, for example fronts I do 2.35 bar or 2.4 bar instead of 2.3 bar recommended. Correct tyre pressures the car will show you, it will drive lighter while remaining smoother and softer over road bumps and cracks, if ride is too soft or too hard it’s either under or over inflated and both of which aren’t good for your tyres. My first set lasted over 60k , second just over 40k , punctured one and replaced all, then 3 weeks I had again unrepairable damage on one and had to get another new tyre, since then all it’s ok 👍
    2 points
  26. Yeah, I'll probably continue with that or perhaps even slightly lower like maybe 34psi as a less extreme compromise. I just want to be careful of not wearing out the centre of the new tyres from being overinflated.
    2 points
  27. It's always better to err on the side of higher tyre pressure than lower (i.e. it's better for them to be a bit too high than a bit too low); If you're raising the psi to 36 just for the drum kit and it drives fine, you can probably leave it there without issue. Usually you shouldn't need to raise the tyre pressures unless the car is fully loaded and going to be travelling at high speeds for extended periods.

  28. And that was an excellent choice. Those Goodyears are excellent. Not very expensive and excellent all around. Very balanced tyres and most important of all, extremely safe.

  30. Being a tight Northerner last week I went out of my way to fill up at Morrisons which was the cheapest in the area, only to brim the car with super unleaded fuel at 10p per litre more..................that'll learn me 🤦‍♂️😂😂😂

  31. Hi Stephen, Congratulations on going over to Lexus, we have owned a couple over the years and know what a great car they can be. If you still have anything to contribute with your experience of Prius ownership why not stick around as I am sure other members could benefit from you knowledge.

  32. Are you always cantankerous? There must be more than one because the last one is yours. I just wanted to see what your point was but can’t be (that word I know you hate) trawling through dozens of posts.

  33. The 1AZ-FSE is D4 direct injection engine. Unlike indirect or port injection which is low/mid pressure, the system works at a much higher pressure using a high pressure pump. Those seals need to be in good shape. Also, AZ engines, E10 is not recommended for use with these engines! Just a reminder and info for those reading and not aware.

  34. Well with some tools and applied force on the right spots I managed to bring it down to 20mm. There is something unnatural about it, as the beam is very close to the radiator. a very tight fit. the hood sits better, but by far not how it was.

  36. Toyota only specify API standards - API SL, SM, SN - so as this is API SN should be OK.

  37. Yeah you lot don't know how lucky you are, not living in an ultra-dense urban environment! It gets worse every year as councils aggressively push CPZs on the residents It does make my life easier when I do need to park outside of London though - I can get in spaces more sensible people pass up!

  38. I happened to stumble upon this issue earlier on one of the Facebook groups. If I can find it again, I will post a link if the forum rules permit (do they?). You're not alone Jikky, it has also happened to that car, and it had silver paint. One hypothesis was that the bristles of an automatic car wash had caught the paint in that area, owing to the right-angle of the panel. Another reason, added to the cursed white paint, that I won't be taking mine through a car wash again 😞 These iQs and their paintwork, eh?!... 😞

  40. Diesel PHEV sounds good in theory, but it turns out diesel engines are terrible for the sort of low-duty stop-start use-cycles that hybrids use. The french tried it and it was pulled for being too unreliable, which says a lot if even they thought it was too unreliable Diesels are actually horribly inefficient until they get to operating temperature (I know this from experience ), and given the petrol engine in my Mk4 struggles to stay at operating temperature sometimes, a diesel engine wouldn't have a hope! Plus with all the emissions control junk bolted onto them, the reliability would be awful - The DPF would block up in months since the engine will have such trouble getting hot enough regularly to purge it. Maybe if it was a really small diesel engine, or if this fabled ducted injection diesel every comes to market, as eliminating the soot would help a lot, but with the sun setting on IC engines I don't think anyone is willing to put in the R&D investment, as short-sighted as that is...

  41. And insuring it will be a pain in the proverbial, plus you won't get any dealer support for parts or servicing if you wanted to, and you'll have all the minor annoyances that come with having a LHD car like ticket barriers will be on the wrong side, drive-through kiosks will be on the wrong side etc. It's not worth the hassle when they are so common on the 2nd hand market here...

  43. "That's another thing - In London, 1.5ft is a LOT of space - If you stopped at that you'd *NEVER* get your vehicle into a street parking space. When we park cars here, we are working with INCHES of clearance, not FEET!!" Deffinitly glad I'm in Yorkshire..... cheers, Mark

  44. Well chaps, after much deliberation over the Avon, Dunlop and Goodyear, I thought I'd stretch my budget and I just bought 4 x Goodyear Efficientgrip Performance 2 tyres. 🙂 I liked the B and A rating for fuel and wetgrip and the very good reviews on it. Best deal I found was National Tyres/Halfords with their 15% discount, so I paid £321.37. I added front wheel tracking for £44.99 since I recently bumped the car over a kerb and it tends to veer left a little. Booked to be fitted on Monday morning.

  45. It was just an observation I’d noticed when refilling. I’m not worried or bothered by it, just curious. 😃 I personally don’t care how much goes in or the range from a full tank, I refill until the pump clicks. I’ve just never had a car which such a large reserve before! Just wandered the reason for the 8L approx reserve and my query has been answered.

  46. While I don't have a Mk4 Yaris, all Toyota's that I have had, have a spring to pop it out initially as you pull the release. But opening it further, it is just "flapping" freely. There is nothing to hold it fully open.
