  1. At last we managed a long run today (200mile round trip) so I can start to share my thoughts about our shiny new Blue Demon! First things first, please ignore the mpg in my sig as it is wrong. I made a mistake when entering our first full tank fuel up and because Fuelly caches stuff, the real measured figure of 56.8mpg, probably won't show until tomorrow. Not withstanding my mess up, I am really impressed with even 56.8 for a first neck to neck anyway! The Red Baron (my previous Launch Edition 2020 car) only managed 48.3 at its first so I am well impressed with Blue Demon's efforts and when you consider that everything will be a bit "tight" etc, that's a great result. Also, it wasn't that hot today either barely getting above 11-12 degrees C so that should be borne in mind... So, what do I think of the new car and the way that the new (more powerful) drivetrain works? As an overall impression and please bear in mind that everything I may say is very subjective and just my opinion based on comparing it with my previous car, I would have to say that I am very impressed with the many improvements but also a bit frustrated with some of the annoyances! One of the first things that hit us both as we settled down to a cruise at about 65mph was just how quiet it was inside compared to the Red Baron. When I opened the driver's window ajar (the top kept within the wind deflector depth) it didn't even seem to be as loud then either. In my opinion, they have certainly beefed up the insulation in some way or ways. You can still make the engine "growl" if you want but even that seems to be a bit more muted than before. Most of the journey on the main roads (either dual carriageway or motorway) was completed using adaptive cruise control and this highlighted something straight away. There seems to have been a lot of improvements in the software department in regard to how things operate now. The system as a whole seems to be a lot less aggressive and "rough around the edges". Things like lane centring and speed matching are a lot smoother and more well controlled. Especially good now is the way it takes a curve when, for example, you go from one motorway to another at an intersection which usually involves some long sweeping slip road bends as you traverse from one to the other and some measure of speed reduction is usually required in the process. Guess what? It is now virtually automatic and oh so smooth in execution! First, it measures the bend well and steers it very gently with no jerks at all whilst at the same time gently slowing the vehicle in the process by some 10-15mph as you negotiate the bend and once the road straightens out again and you are on the next motorway, it gently regains the speed you were travelling at before! All in all, a very well managed process. The radar is also so good now it virtually never lost the lane markings or edge of the road once all the way there. Even around town it is so well mannered even at very slow speeds. We tried the built-in Nav for a time and also Android Auto but eventually stayed with the latter as the built-in Nav is so old fashioned in terms of its display (a personal preference I know) and harks back to the days of TomTom displays. I'm afraid Google beats it hands down with a full screen of realistic looking landscapes from satellite shot overlays and is so much more relatable with what you are actually seeing on the road instead of spidery roadmaps with no features on it at all. One nice change I really liked is that the interior rear view mirror can also go straight up and down now as well as the usual ball joint adjustment. This is particularly useful for people like myself with a 6'3" frame and also allows more of the windscreen between the top of the (bigger) head unit and the base of the mirror, to be clear and unobstructed ahead. Also at last they have separated the nav voice and audio stream properly in that you can adjust them separately now from the same control now (which didn't work at all well before). Anyway, I've probably gone on long enough for now so I'll finish this episode here and will offer some more thoughts later...

  2. When I picked ours up the pressures were so over inflated it had Goodyear written on the side and had two blokes holding it down with ropes…

  3. Would love to echo your thoughts, but can't get near the other half's new premiere 🤪 But first impressions from her she really likes the updated Yaris - she was set not to as she couldn't get in black and wasnt keen on the blue (whic I really like). She went for silver metallic bitone. Agreed, quieter, smoother, nice power/torque increase, much improved dash and HUD with now everything she wants displayed. Dark interior, ambient lighting, wireless charging and cloud sat nav all plus points and she kept BSM, JBL, HUD, dipping rear mirror. Seems better put together and no rattles yet and MPG looking healthy (don't have a figure but she's not mentioned it being lower). No negatives to speak of - generally great update and as noted the software seems better all round - she says it genuinely feels like driver assistance now. I will drive it at some point, but from a passenger and pensive partner perspective, I'm very happy too!

  4. Alan, as it happens I just got my insurance renewal today. One of the questions was Dashcams but not who fitted them or indeed which one. I had an excellent, from the POV of the FOV, had some excellent Chinese cameras. Now Nextbase cameras are also Chinese but they record actual speed and G loadings. In other words the model of the camera is important. There should also be a distinction between a single camera, a front or rear, a twin camera setup, or even the model of camera.

  7. Louie, had you let it, its next trick you be to throw you through the windscreen if you were not strapped in. Law One – “A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.” Law Two – “A robot must obey orders given to it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.” Which law did it try to observe?

  10. Bear in mind that legally new VAG cars will be required to have similar safety systems to the current Corolla - lane keep assist, intelligent speed assistance, etc, etc. So given your previous posts, may be prudent to join a VW forum .....

  12. "Look behind you it's a Goodyear Blimp! ... No wait it's just Primus1 coming back from the dealer..." I do wonder if Mazda have overlooked the oil in their supply chain, as very few cars spec 0w8 and it is very hard to get hold of - Toyota dealers are the only easily accessible and reliable source I know of...

  13. I had my dashcam professionally installed by an auto electrician, mainly because I didn’t want any future problems if I had to visit the dealer with a fault and they said it was the dash cam, I could argue that a professional installed it, I can’t remember if there was a question asking if there were any modifications and what they were..

  14. Well I found this under Terminator, if I find any more "I'll be back." 😄 Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) Lane control systems are better categorized as part of Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS). These are a collection of technologies that assist drivers but don't replace them entirely. So, while lane control systems share some functionalities with robots, they are a less complex type of technology within the ADAS umbrella.😂

  18. Lol! 🤣 I must admit that I would have liked a complete black one also if it had been available... I'd be interested in her findings re: the HUD? Has she found a way to change what it displays whilst actually on a journey yet or not? (as opposed to when standing still) I would echo her thoughts in that regard... Great! Would also be interested in any further thoughts that you may have...

  19. Just thinking all the undeclared mods I have done over the years. Too many to list here. Just one: How about insisting the dealer fit a stainless exhaust? Oh, what about winter tyres?

  21. Seriously that's their answer?? Reading someone's experience can help others. If my Toyota dealership service dept or mechanic tells me 0w8 doesn't exist, I'd probably say, "so I know more than u?" Is that how it suppose to work??. Would consider making a complaint regarding charging extra for even 0W20 oil, that would not be something I can put up with. Would go to another dealer if that is their attitude and competence, though not always practical as another one could be miles away. As well they could print 0W8 in the papers or enter that in the data, would be none the wiser.

  22. You know I completely forgot about the dashcams - was exactly the same as the steering lock process and questions. I wonder if dashcams scare the insurers because it prevents 50/50 blame in clear cut accidents so if they have a numpty driver as a client they'll be bang to rights. I do wish there was alot more rules and regulation on insurance, both for car and home. You HAVE to have it and so they should be held more to account on their actions and pricings.

  25. What's annoying is that this problem has persisted for a few years now and that Toyota has not deemed it appropriate to issue a general recall and be done with it once and for all, instead of this piecemeal fix it ****!

  27. I'd guess some insurers view DIY installation as a fire risk. And TBH many probably are. Insurers have to deal with the 90%* of the population who are incompetents that think the cost of their premiums over time is some sort of savings scheme that they are entitled to get back. * Probably 80% actually. I think 10% don't even have insurance.

  28. @Cyker, until you have been there, and recently too, you have no idea what is what. From the shock, everything is alien, outside your comfort zone. My MiL was rear ended and tge the other driver said please don't call the police - error. Anyway she did tell her insur.insurance company and her car was written off. What it took time though was to find out who was actually dealing with her claim. We eventually realised it was Acromas, not her insurer but a claims management company. Effectively thus was outsourced by her insurer. The woman there was good and organised a hire car, which was declined, and physio which was accepted. Had we known, she should have gone for taxis until fit enough to drive.

  29. Just to clarify I wasn't talking about criteria for the premium, but what specifically constitutes a 'modification' - You could be with one insurer with go-faster stripes, wind deflectors, a dash cam and steel winter wheels and they'd be fine, while another would decline your insurance; That's what I mean by there's no consistency. Yeah this is why Axa is on my blacklist - They consistently seem to be one of the most customer-hostile insurers on the market and will find any loophole to get out of paying up; I was reminded of their attitude recently when I got rear-ended in mine: The underwriter for the other party was Axa and they called me up to try and get me to turn everything over to them instead of going through my insurance, spouting half-truths to try FUD* me into it when I initially refused. *Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt - What Microsoft were known for, and what the kids call gaslighting now I believe!

  30. Sadly even second hand the Yaris Cross is just that bit more than we can afford to pay. I guess the next best bet would be the C-HR?

  31. How did you get a picture of my mother in law..?

  32. Yes Corolla is low and many are switching to Yaris Cross. Or consider C-HR with the legendary 1.8L engine. I'd avoid new Corolla if you're struggling with height of the old one.

  33. We have folks in the Yaris forum getting the Yaris cross which is higher, they are finding them very good for mobility and higher seating position for the road.

  34. 3 screws 1in the door release behind the plastic cap 2 under the window switch trim, the rest is clips if it has never been off, it can be extremely tight you need a trim tool or a taped up screwdriver to pop it off, start at the lower left of the door card @Bper the vid is of a second facelift Yaris (lhd) but its pretty much the same for all MK3s

  35. He's talking rubbish! Of course they can be fitted to your car. However, they are a bit difficult to get hold of at the moment while Toyota gets its supply situation sorted out... (the official Toyota ones)

  36. The real problem is not with new cars ( where over inflating is due to logistics reasons ) but with periodic maintenance. If you drop the car with a correct pressure why you get it back with over inflated ( and sometimes with a differnte pressure on each tyre ) tyres ? Moreover it seems a standard behaviour not restricred to a specific dealer. I live in Italy and I'm experiencing the same issue as you and other UK customers. Chatting with other Italian customers ( also living in other towns than my one ) the experience was the same. So I can exclude that is due to a defective pressure meter of a specific service but it seems to be a standard procedure.

  37. Service was carried out, small issue was the online booking I did through the app never went to the dealer, despite me getting confirmation. Dealer was helpful and did the service ASAP, we walked into St Ives (Cambs), nice walk along the river and lunch. By the time we walked back, the car was ready. The only thing that wasn't done was the recall for the SOS software as they couldn't connect to the Toyota servers. Great service from Steven Eagell in St.Ives

  39. That’s what annoyed me as the tyres were 29/32 when we dropped the car off but the technician inflated them to 38/41. He obviously didn’t think that those pressures might be incorrect which is worrying.
    2 points
  40. That's really bad, I mean if you weren't car savvy, and a lot of people aren't, you'd never have known. And the tyre pressures, yes when new cars arrive they are always over inflated for travel, and the dealer often forgets to lower them, but 38/41?

  42. Looks for all the world like the cat has been removed and replaced with a bit of pipework and presumably done to avoid fixing whatever was wrong. The cat can fail for any number of reasons and if the engine is running without an O2 sensor then its running 'open loop' which means it will never run correctly or meet emissions standards.

  45. Hi Henry, a noisy exhaust on a car you just bought 3 weeks ago is concerning. There are a couple of ways to approach this depending on your comfort level and the car's warranty. If the car is under warranty, take it back, exhaust issues are usually covered, and a mechanic will diagnose and fix the problem for free. Take the car back to the dealership where you purchased it and explain the issue. If you brought the car privately then try to listen for the type of noise as it can point to the problem. A rattling sound might indicate a loose heat shield or bracket. A hissing or blowing sound could be an exhaust leak at a connection point. A deep, droning sound suggests a problem with the silencer itself. Over time, the nuts, bolts and clamps that hold the exhaust system together can loosen up and rattle. You might be able to tighten these yourself, but be sure to not overtighten anything. A hole or crack in the exhaust pipe will cause a loud leak. Patching a small hole with exhaust sealant might be a temporary fix, but a more permanent solution is likely to involve replacing the exhaust section. Silencers are designed to quieten the exhaust, and they can wear out over time. A damaged silencer won't be as effective, making the exhaust louder.Hope this helps.

  46. Cars usually arrive with transportation tyre pressures (often 40-50 odd psi. Dealer should drop them during the PDI stage but they often don’t.

  47. To be fair even Toyota dealers do this sometimes My first Mk1 was at another dealer and the dealer I bought it from were basically if you want it you need to commit as we won't ship it all the way down here otherwise, and being a bit naive as to what Used Approved meant I agreed (Hint: It's means smeg-all). I basically bought it sight-unseen, and while the car was basically okay, in hindsight I probably overpaid for the condition it was in; The rims had severe Mk1 alloy wheel peel and the boot had a small garden centre's worth of sand and shrubbery in it which I only discovered later when I looked in the spare wheel well. Now as a more skeptical and suspicious person I would absolutely not buy a 2nd hand car unless I can see it in the flesh and test drive it from cold. The funny thing is a lot of these mail order car companies like Cinch and Cazoo work in this exact way - You're effectively buying the car sight-unseen and have to rely on them honouring their own agreement if the car turns out to be duff in some way. I'm surprised they've been so successful as I'd never buy a car in that fashion if I could help it, esp. as I'm under the impression a lot of their cars are from auctions...

  49. Can't pick it up (so no idea where they are) and 5 days for them to disappear ... I'd run. (But to be fair, these days I won't even consider a private sale - too many scammers in the game and I can afford to pay a bit more for peace of mind. Your risk aversion may vary.)
