  1. Apart from 2 forays into other marques I've pretty much bought Fords, and mostly the XR/ST/RS ones at that, my whole life. I only switched to Toyota due to Ford withdrawing the Fiesta as I really missed the smaller cars. And their obsession with electric only 🤔 So I was always going to be a reluctant soldier and my purchase was going to be full of scepticism and maybe (hopefully not) regret. But I have to say that I absolutely love the Premiere edition because: - I love the blue colour - The body shape is excellent - The economy is amazing - It drives beautifully - It's a technical tour de force. Love playing with the throttle to try and tease as much economy out of it as I can and the HUD is just fab - The adaptive cruise is more intelligent than Ford's - The ability of the speed limiter to match itself to the current speed limit with just one button press is just excellent. I use the speed limiter constantly so this is really good - Mrs Dastardly (Penelope?) loves it - The configuration options on the dashboard are excellent. - It just feels like it's been designed by boffins, rather than people in overalls But it's not all roses 🌹 Some, albeit minor, annoyances. - The engine is quite harsh/growly. Ford's 3 pot system is much smoother and not nearly as loud. - The door handles feel quite flimsy due to being quite thin but I'm sure I'll get used to that. - The positioning of the window controls are a little strange compared to what I am used to. Very high up. Probably just me though - Severe lack of internal storage. Door pockets are tiny, no opportunity to store anything in the centre console - Quite annoying that your personal options, e.g. turning off PCA, resets every time you re-start the engine, unless I'm just being thick - The "Hold" button resetting itself on every journey is bizarre. Should remember the setting or just be a configurable menu option. - Lack of factory options e.g. sunroof, heated seats. Would have paid for both The negatives are just minor/personal really as the positives are so good. Haven't been this happy with a new car acquisition for a long time 👍

  2. Toyota themselves confused things when the current Corolla came out in 2019, by referring to the hybrid as having a CVT in the price list released in November 2018: https://media.toyota.co.uk/toyota-announces-prices-and-specifications-for-the-all-new-corolla-hatchback-and-touring-sports/#:~:text=As full hybrids%2C both powertrains, with six-speed manual transmission.

  3. "Modern" cars have dual circuits, often split front and rear or diagonally. If you loose pressure (i.e. a puncture) in one circuit you will still have some ability to stop using the other two wheels. You will also have the mechanical handbrake to aid in an emergency. That bleed nipple is stuck and won't fall out off its own accord. Still, it is not something you want to try and, as I mentioned, you will need a functioning bleed nipple to replace the brake fluid sooner or later so it must be done by then anyway. Might as well spay rust penetrant on the brake line union now in preparation for replacing the wheel cylinder.

  4. It's got drum brakes in the rear. A new hydraulic wheel cylinder is really cheap, so there is no point spending time trying to get the remainder of the bleed nipple out. Since the valve snapped off before you could loosen it, it will not leak and you can drive it. But brake fluid ages and needs to be replaced at some point so you should get a new brake cylinder. They look something like this

  6. The user manual states 3.2 litre without filter and 3.5 litre with filter. There is no mention of sump plug torque. Normally it's about 25-35 Nm - not a lot. Not an opportunity to show off the gorilla muscles.

  7. Anyone figure this out? Since I don't have a spare perhaps they need to urgently sell me one? Anyone else have this on the R4P or HEV? Came through marked urgent from my Toyota dealer who, TBF, aren't the sharpest tools in the box.

  8. Basically if it's a Toyota hybrid, it'll have an 'eCVT', aka the HSD (Hybrid Synergy Drive, the marketing name) or PSD (Power Split Device, the 'proper' name). If it's not a hybrid, it won't. But you read the article wrong - It doesn't say the UK doesn't get 'eCVT' (I hate that term) Corollas, it's saying the UK doesn't get Corollas with normal CVT gearboxes - Toyota only sell hybrid models in the UK for the Yaris and Corolla which are all 'eCVT'; The Manual and CVT-equipped ones are only available in other countries.

  9. Quite popular choice in Bulgaria and other European countries Toyota Corolla petrol cvt non hybrids. They do have also Chr and rav4 non hybrid variants.

  10. its an eCVT (hybrid) also known as the hybrid synergy drive or HSD and it is nothing like a push belt CVT https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hybrid_Synergy_Drive as you are new to cars, it is bulletproof it will do 300-500k+ miles if looked after as proved by many a Prius owner, the gearbox has many variations over the last 25 years - so it is a well-developed product https://media.toyota.co.uk/vehicles/corolla-2019-current/ https://mag.toyota.co.uk/toyota-hybrid-synergy-drive-in-numbers-infographic/

  11. 2019 Corolla is an eCVT. From a driver's perspective, speaking as someone whose previous two car cars were CVT (Honda Jazz), it doesn't feel any different. Both types offer smooth, seamless and efficient delivery of power. Some drivers (the rabid petrol kind typically) dislike the 'laid back' feel. But it's only a feeling because both these types of CVT can feed power to the wheels if the driver demands it. It's just that most of us learn to appreciate the more civilised feel of CVT driving. I think some drivers dislike utilising the full travel of the accelerator pedal. I don't know why. Both Honda and Toyota build damn' good engines so if the manufacturers give us a certain amount of pedal travel then use it! On the rare occasions when I want to move I just bury the pedal into the carpet and let loose the dogs! Admittedly I don't have as many dogs as the 2.0 litre guys but I have enough of them should the need arise 🙂

  12. Yes it is the eCVT, the system does not have the belt and cones, it has planetary gears. It is simply the best cvt system by miles, you never feel the change from ice to electric. There was/is a “normal” ice car but very few have been sold in the UK.

  13. true - although the Cross exterior will be the same as is now. You can probably see the updated media screen in the revised Yaris which is arriving in showrooms and the Khaki colour has been available on the RAV 4. I managed to see all the parts at my nearest dealer (in Reading) although not altogether on the same car ! 🙂

  14. Must be part of the new EU 24 directive that means you have to cancel the speed limit alerts every journey

  15. Just like to add when in Sport mode as well as the throttle response being more sensitive I find the Regen is too which provides a more "Connected" experience - not usually desirable but sometimes useful.

  16. Like you I switch between modes to suit conditions. For the OP, most hybrids and EV’s have buffer zones built into the battery range to prevent full discharge (and overcharging). This helps significantly with battery longevity. Sport mode doesn’t release more power (as some think), it simply changes throttle response to make the car appear quicker. When towing I use battery save mode otherwise the battery discharges very quickly. Using the battery around town and for slow speed journeys is more efficient than on fast motorway journeys.

  17. Mine come on when you open the doors or when you switch the ignition off before opening the doors to exit the vehicle. They come on half brightness when the running/headlights are on.

  18. Thanks for the B reminder. Shows clearly why it can't detect my key when I put it in the dash stowage. PITA as I have to drop it in a cup holder. Mind you, my wife as a passenger is even better with the house keys. They may be in the left door pocket, her handbag, on the floor by her right foot, in a cup holder, or the front cubby. NTST 😮‍💨

  19. Excellent. My mate has traded his Cross for a 73 CHR and he loves it. It’s in Midnight Teal which is sensational It’s a 2.0 and is noticeably quicker than my Lexus. A lot of the taxis in Manchester have the 1.8 and the do about 65 knocking round town. We’ll need pictures of course.

  20. First ensure that the ignition is on as the option is not visible if you are only in Accessory mode. In the main centre console press on the Settings icon then there is a menu link on the left called "vehicle settings" They keyless door/start option is under that. Bear in mind that if you turn it off then you also turn off keyless start you you need to hold your key next to the start button when putting into Ready mode. You'll get a confirmatory beep. This is a minor annoyance but you're getting extra security so I feel it's worth it

  21. The MK4 is the best small automatic car in the world, your one is mk 4.5 shall we call it. Am very satisfied with the normal 116 hp.

  22. EV mode then power is circa 230hp max but Toyota curtail the power delivery above 50mph. My experience from testing. Hybrid mode then the 306hp DIN is available. Motors plus ICE working together. Battery does not need to be charged to get the full power in hybrid mode. There's a reserve in the traction battery which is near on impossible to deplete. I've tried especially hard and I've got it to almost zero but failed to get it to zero. The second you aren't accelerating that reserve is topped up from the generator on the ICE. This happens pretty quick. I'd say the only risk of totally flattening the reserve is by caning it at 90mph with frequent acceleration bursts towing a caravan up hill. Note that hybrid mode does not give you full 306hp if the engine is cold. Takes 3 to 8 minutes to warm up (depending on outside temperature) before full power is made available. Until then you are looking at 230hp. Again, I've tested this. Personally, I manually select between EV and Hybrid mode rather than use Auto. I know where I'm going and can maximise use of the traction battery to ensure I empty it rather than using petrol. So if I'm on the motorway I'll switch to EV mode when in a jam or it's the average 50mph speed limit thing and when off the motorway I'll use EV mode. Eventually I've got good at deciding when to switch. Whether the above is as good as the Auto mode is another matter. Eco, Normal and Sport modes change the throttle response (sensitivity of the accelerator pedal), steering weight (I think), and the Aircon performance. I usually run the car in sport mode.

  23. One of the Mk4's weaknesses is poor visibility; Forward visibility is okay, but the A-pillars create blindspots which can obscure oncoming vehicles; I find they're particularly leery on roundabouts and I'm having to rock back and forth to look around them. The rear view mirror is very much in the way - I can see why GR owners cut a slot into the arm to allow it to be pushed higher. Rear visibility is probably the worst of all the Yaris models - The B and C pillars create huge blind spots all round with all the headrests covering what they don't, making the rear 270 degrees practically blind aside from directly backwards. I've had some near misses that I only caught because of the blind spot monitors.

  24. Not just psychological: 3 Sport mode Controls the steering feeling and hybrid system to create an acceleration response that is suitable for sporty driving. Suitable for when crisp handling is desired, such as when driving on mountainous roads. So, Sport mode certainly 'weights up' the steering which works well when driving 'quickly' down country lanes. Accelerator response is sharper in the sense that it requires less travel for the same response from the hybrid system. There's no real indication that it does anything more clever than that.

  26. Not expected in showrooms until May/June and then will likely be the Khaki version. From the briefing guide I saw, the other colours are Oxide Bronze, Pearl White or Metallic Silver (all bi-tone) - the interior trim remains the same irrespective of outside colour

  28. There is a little bit of info on the 24 MY Premium edition on this link 2024 Toyota Yaris Cross: What's changed? - Toyota UK Magazine Your Toyota dealer should also have a briefing guide for the 24 MY updates - they should allow you to see it if your considering ordering one. We all still wait with bated breath for Toyota UK to update the current December 2022 brochure on the website for the latest one ( several people have asked about that on the link above )

  30. Forward view is just fine, haven't noticed any issues. Funny you should say about the rear view though. I noticed for the first time yesterday that I couldn't find any position that made the rear view central or didn't make the headrests the center of attention. Apparently there's a means of adjusting up and down, in addition to the swivel ball, but I haven't figured that out yet

  38. I don't buy new - I did say that they don't haggle on their price but will on the PX, not they will not negotiate at all New on finance/pcp/other is another matter, they know their margin and what they can make I prefer to buy out right, that is my preference

  39. Eh? Dealers will always haggle. I have never, ever paid list. I expect a good % off then start asking for extras: mats, ceramic coat, fuel, free services thrown in and always succeed. As long as you are polite, have done your research (get prices from Carwow/ auto trader/ what car etc and also use forums to see what others are getting as extras or % off) you should always pay well under. if you are fortunate enough to pay cash then getting the pcp deposit allowance and then paying the pcp off within 30 days is always a nice easy win! “Shy bairns get nowt” as they say from my neck of the woods😉

  46. Hi Paul, I am sure other members will give you the information but look in you owners manual it this is the most reliable source for information specific to your car's model and year. The owner's manual should have a section on maintenance that details the oil capacity and torque specifications.Hope this helps.

  48. Hi Bob,no your not wrong, the Premiere Edition boasts a premium JBL sound system for an enhanced audio experience. Blind Spot Monitor,This safety feature is included in the Premiere Edition, helping you detect vehicles in your blind spot. Head Up Display (HUD), the Premiere Edition offers a Head Up Display that projects essential driving information onto the windscreen. These features are on top of what the standard Yaris Cross might offer, giving the Premiere Edition a more feature rich option apparently.
