  2. In the UK we have slightly different speedometer regulations to the rest of Europe. As with the UNECE regulations and EC Directives, in the UK a speedometer must never show an indicated speed less than the actual speed. However the UK differs slightly from them in specifying that for all actual speeds between 25 mph and 70 mph (or the vehicles' maximum speed if it is lower than this), the indicated speed must not exceed 110% of the actual speed, plus 6.25 mph. For example, if the vehicle is actually travelling at 50 mph, the speedometer must not show more than 61.25 mph or less than 50 mph. So when your car is travelling at a true 30mph, the speedometer can quite legally show an indicated speed of up to 39.25mph.

  3. Smart phones only really took off in 2007, streaming music was unheard of, you do have old technology, but the car is 7 years old, imagine what the iPhone will be like in 7 years? You could always buy a new headunit and fit that, a genuine one would be prohibitive in price but there are plenty of auto electrical specialists to do it for you and you could then have a headunit that has bluetooth / streaming etc built in

  6. I can't help much since you have the problem with both keys. I could say get another receiver from the breakers, but I don't know if swapping the receiver will stop the system from working. It is the risk. I would try re-syncing the keys as the system is over 15 years old. Try the following as printed in the handbook: http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/topic/166489-avensis-1998-unlock-remote-key-fix-taken-from-forum/ I did this with both keys and everything works as normal. Before the keys were erratic. 7. If there was one thing I would really like Toyota to adopt on hybrids, it would be those active grill shutters (shouldnt that be radiator blinds for the uk market?!) that are now on some Fords

  8. Hello all. Just an update re the problem, I removed the ECU cleaned the connectors, stuffed it back in, didn't put the glove box back and started using the car for work. Well its about 200 miles on and it hasn't let me down since. So fingers crossed its OK, I have a spare fuel pump and sender and a spare ECU so I may just hang onto them or stuff em back on ebay when I feel like it, unless anyone here wants them. The car was falling over about every 10 miles'ish so I am hoping the issue ifs fixed. I am now starting to really like its easy going manners, its not fast or out of the ordinary but has plenty of torque and is comfortable and I can get my drum kit and PA in there so it's a win, and all for £350 with 1 years MOT!! Again many thanks to all who offered help but particularly to Konrad who was very helpful.

  10. I always wonder how that stuff would even work as nothing in the fuel system should get anywhere near the turbo unless something has gone very wrong!

  11. I have found the photos which may be better than a diagram. The position of the relay given by Henri is correct. Now here is what it looks like: The relay is the left most on the photo showing 4 relays. This is the link which identifies which relay does what function: http://www.japan-parts.eu/toyota/eu/2001/avensis/zzt221l-almekw/3_273540_095_/electrical/8401_switch-relay-computer/3 Image R/B No.1 confirms the relay positions - no6.

  14. It would appear from what has been said that the Prius can cope well with abuse, and generally won't do the wrong thing when asked, like go into reverse at 70mph (I know someone who achieved this in a manual, and reduced his vans gearbox to iron filings). However the classic error of drivers coming from manual to autos happens as you slow down after a long steady speed run, when you wouldn't have been gearchanging in a manual. As you lift off the throttle the brain reverts to autopilot, some try to change down, and some try to select neutral. In most cases this also requires a declutch, and so the left foot stamps on the clutch. As there is no clutch pedal this foot normally finds the brake pedal in an auto and results in a thunderstop. I have done it many times as I have had a mix of manuals and autos. In all cases it was my error, not the cars. Even recently though when I had to emergency stop I tried to declutch at the same time. BSM trained this into me 30 years ago, and it would appear the reflex is still there. Chrispy, for your own peace of mind, you need to get your friend to understand this is what probably happened. Then they can get on with understanding these reflexes are simply trained in, and they needn't be embarrassed about it, and you can get on with trusting your car to do what it's told.
