  1. After fitting winter tyres (Nokian WR D3) to our van last year and being very happy with them, we decided to fit a set of winters to the IQ. So an order to Oponeo for a set of Nokian WR D4 (the newer model) and £180 spent, then a trip to the local tyre fitter (another £40) and we have a nice new set of four. I had a good chat with the fitter, who's a big advocate of winter tyres, telling me that he had a lot of customers who were a bit skeptical but had returned in the spring totally converted. He also explained about them not only being about snow and ice, and that it was the softer compound in temperatures below 7 degrees which made them so much better. I know the temperatures at the moment are a bit above that, but fitting them now gives them time to scrub up and lose any oil or protective coating they have, so they should be good and ready for when the temperature drops. Well so far after about ten miles they feel exactly the same as the previous Ecopias, no more noise and grip exactly the same. Time will tell if MPG is affected but they are supposed to be good for rolling resistance. I'll post updates as the weather changes and if i notice any differences. But here are some pics:

  3. I have not heard of a avensis with a bad chain yet , lets hope its a good thing, keep the chain lubricated with regular services and correct spec oil as mentioned by Konrad.

  4. The newer shape Avensis uses both the 1ad-ftv and 2ad-ftv engines and they are substantially the same, but the ones built after February 2009 have modifications to the design which reduces the likelihood of head gasket failure. There are plenty of the earlier Avensis around with no issues, and it has been discussed here that the numbers may amount to a few percent of vehicles in those years that had an issue. If I were considering a vehicle in the problem years I'd read up on the early symptoms of failure, look very carefully at the vehicle in question to see if the head has been off, if it's a private sale question the owner in a very innocent way about oil use and make a call based on the facts. Your likelihood of issues seems to be lower with the 2.0 than the 2.2, but the power will be lower too. 2.0 vehicles pre facelift used the 1cd-ftv engine which is a completely different design and is considered bullet proof by many taxi drivers.

  5. So long as the engine has had regular oil and filter changes, then the chain should last the life of the engine. Only if it is noisy would a change be necessary.

  6. Yes i changed them to blue. You could change them to white instead of puting the amber ones back. You still have the Door switched, the anti skid button, the headlight leveller, the start switch, The dash, the seatbelt/airbag module and the navigation buttons on the steering wheel David

  7. Have you priced up the equivalent Citroen/Peugeot parts (assuming the door seals are the same)? Could also have a look here: http://www.c1store.co.uk/store/index.php?cPath=192

  8. Hi Richard again. Alan May have a point. Check see if you are covered for this before touching anything. Now, if you are not covered, I found this video: I have done quite a few installs on various cars, so it depends how much work is needed. You have seen my install http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/tutorials/article/50-how-to-add-usb-adapter-to-avensis-t27-with-w53828-cd-stereo/ I know this for the Avensis, but the Auris is just as easy. This is just so you get access to the rear of the stereo. I have special trim removal tools that does not mark or damage the trim. First with a suitable flat blade lift the outer silver trim. What you decide to do depends on what you find. Konrad

  9. It is legit. Government Departments don't have the IT expertise to develop their own computer systems or websites, so it is common, and has been for a number of years, to put this work out to tender and contract. Examples: 1. I worked for a Government Department on procurement, and a secure online tendering, tender evaluation and contract award service we used was developed and owned by QineteQ, and was used under licence from QinetiQ. 2. the development and management of the Jobcentre Plus Universal Jobmatch (the website that customers use to search for vacancies, etc) was contracted out to Monster.co.uk in 2012 and runs until 2016. 3. HP are contracted to manage the DWP IT system (hardware and software), and supply all of the desktops, laptops, printers, etc. Kainos are one of the companies that the UK Government have contracted with to develop and manage online services for a number of Departments. See: https://www.kainos.com/our-work/digital-services/ Aside from that the link I gave is for the Beta service (which is currently undergoing an evaluation period), and the link in the second post - https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-history-vehicle - states the service is unavailable (presumably because of the Beta site).

  10. Hi all, just thought I'd introduce myself as I'm sure I'll be on here alot over the next few months asking for help on my project.. 1991 ST185 found in a barn when looking at a fridge. Buying the celica was not part of the plan, but plans change. I will get some pictures up of her soon and then start a project thread once work gets underway.. I look forward to GT4 ownership.

  12. Hi, welcome to the club ;) The problem with the Rav4 engine is the head gasket and issue is well known with TOYOTA dealers. If you notice any water loss from the header tank it's advisable to contact dealer, in most cases they will replace engine even if out of waranty.
